I've used up 2L of my 5L of oil for top ups so far. Just reached 7000km. And after reading the above post, I'm thinking of doing an oil change now instead of waiting for the 15,000km service...

My car had 22km on the clock when I picked it up from the dealership and I drove it from there to home reasonably hard.
It was recently topped up at just over 4K with LiquiMoly...only driven 600km since and haven't checked the levels since.sigpic

In other news. I was due to get my car back tomorrow but have now been told this afternoon that they are still having problems so they are replacing the entire engine. Its in stock so hopefully I get my car back next week. I'm not expecting any miracles as I am pretty certain that VDub will manage to F**k this up too somehow.2010 Polo GTI 5dr, reflex metallic silver, MDI.

So sorry to read about your troubles, Miles. Will keep my fingers crossed for you.
On another note, can someone describe where I should be looking for an oil warning light, as I can't find one when the rest of the instrument cluster runs through its self test on start up.
Thanks.2011 Polo GTI | Black | 5 doors | Comfort pack | Audio pack | 9w7 Bluetooth | Xenons - a Return to VW!

Well I have done a total of 8500kms now and as you will all know I dumped and changed the oil myself at 5k kms with the recommended vw oil from a dealer. I am happy to say that the oil consumption issue has stabilized and it's pretty much a non issue. Thank goodness.

The instruments section, unlike previous owner's manuals I have seen, does NOT have a diagram of the light locations on the dash - just a description of the lights that should be there.
On the other hand, in the maintenance section, an oil warning light is also described, and in fact, should have 2 colours - yellow when the oil is low, and red when the car must be stopped. While it is described, it is not mentioned where I might find this light, and, as I mentioned above, there is no such light on the instrument panel when I turn the key.
So either the light is non-existant, or it shows up where one would not expect (MFD? - but that would be monochrome, wouldn't it), or the light is faulty.
Any VW techs on here that might be able to clarify? Any other GTI owners on here can describe where they see it - if they do? In the tacho panel? The speedo panel? Somewhere else?
Now that I have had to top up on one occasion, so far, and no light appeared, even though the dipstick was down to the C section, I would love to know if my light exists or not.
Thanks.
Addendum: the owner's manual does state that not all lights will self-test on ignition. Perhaps this explains it, but, Damn, seems like an important light to omit. And I'm still non the wiser. Is the light not there because it shouldn't be, or because it is faulty? Would have been handy if they had itemized which lights to expect to self-test.Last edited by RoknRob; 17-09-2011, 11:57 PM.2011 Polo GTI | Black | 5 doors | Comfort pack | Audio pack | 9w7 Bluetooth | Xenons - a Return to VW!

you know...it beats the cr*p out of me why so many owners won't ask the dealership questions (like this one). Sorry, but the techs have been VW trained, and I, fopr one, would expect that they would know the answer. If they didn't, then there would be a genuine reason to gripe about your dealer/service dept.MY16 Touareg 4.2Lt V8 TDI/Pure White LED lightbox/REDARC Brake Controller/ Racechip/iDrive Throttle controller

First of all, I am not griping about anyone...
Except you, now, Mr High and Mighty.
If everybody followed your advice, 90 percent of this forum wouldn't be here. Fortunately, I'm convinced most other forum users don't see it your way.
So excuse me for stopping here first before taking a whole lot of extra time to traipse down to a dealer to MAYBE get an answer.
Perhaps you have all the time in the world, but I don't.
Now, if somebody else might kindly offer a response, that would be appreciated.
If not, I will, indeed take it to the dealer. And post my findings here, so others can benefit. As you would expect... from a forum like this..2011 Polo GTI | Black | 5 doors | Comfort pack | Audio pack | 9w7 Bluetooth | Xenons - a Return to VW!

I'm with you.
Have no idea why VW would flash up all the other lights and not oil.
My wife's NB does
You would also think the manual would have a picture of the dash lit up so as you did know where the "mystery" lights were
I actually took mine to the dealer.
They told me that the light worked - I was happy with that.
Never thought to ask WHERE the light was - d'oh

Biz,
Thanks for your generous response.
At least one mystery is solved - that the light is not intended to light up at ignition - very surprisingly... Very "bizarre" !
So in the end, even if you could tell us where the light was, one would still need to have it checked to make sure it is functioning correctly... or just trust that it is...
As I mentioned, my oil was pretty low - down in the C level, according to the manual diagram - but no warning light came on. I guess for me, anyway, it is a trip to the dealer to have mine checked. I suspect they will understand my concern...
Thanks again, biz.2011 Polo GTI | Black | 5 doors | Comfort pack | Audio pack | 9w7 Bluetooth | Xenons - a Return to VW!

No need to go off on the "personal attack" road. But seeing as you have 'set the standard'..............I resent the cantankerous and non-sober remark. Mr Low and Weak. To resort to personal attacks, merely shows your inability to accept a written suggestion. You don't have to do anything. I am merely suggesting that you have invested $$$s into your car (with a value of warranty). Why not use the knowledge of the manufacturer? I hope the dealership are able to satisfy your enquiry.
In the end, you're going to do what I merely suggested. Hope the humble pie is to your satisfaction.MY16 Touareg 4.2Lt V8 TDI/Pure White LED lightbox/REDARC Brake Controller/ Racechip/iDrive Throttle controller

Ok, I have removed the statements to which you object from my post, but if you thought your implication that my question was crap, and that I was complaining for nothing, wouldn't be taken personally...
You didn't "merely suggest". That would have sounded very different.
As for humble pie, on the contrary, thanks to this conversation, plenty of other owners can rest assured if they've never seen their oil lamp.
All without needing to visit their dealer.
And that's what forums are about.Last edited by RoknRob; 18-09-2011, 07:16 AM.2011 Polo GTI | Black | 5 doors | Comfort pack | Audio pack | 9w7 Bluetooth | Xenons - a Return to VW!
