Berwick Vdub had a second look at my #4 cylinder misfire issue and replaced the coil pack, still monitoring the situation but it seems to be accelerating much smoother and less lumpy than before. I also asked them about the new oil separator and could not confirm when it is coming. I got a neither confirm or deny if it is getting done for Australia.

    • So 3rd time since 15,000km services I've had to do a oil top up. I'm calling VW and seeing if they can do this new engine breather treatment... I've had enough of getting my car topped up. The saving in fuel consumption if getting over weighed by oil costs.

      • I got a new engine a few weeks ago and had been hoping this would be the end of it. So far, I've been taking it easy on the engine but there is already black soot building up on the rear. I'm havent gotten around to checking the oil level but will wait until I hit 1000km and see whats been consumed.

Use a higher gear to rev up the engine till redline after oil temp hit above 85.

          • Dear all.
My GTI is a thirsty monster for engine oil. I can confirm the oil breather is now official. Mine has been ordered - it will arrive apparently next week. free under warranty .if you have a polo GTi and has gone through oil consumption test with the dealer you should have the rights to ask them to order the part in and replace it for you.

i regularly top up oil every 5000kms. (1L oil / 5000km or so). had oil consumption test twice, and told it was normal. My car has now done over 10000km, and the consumption is still high (unlike what they said in the manual - where the consumption supposed to decrease after 5000km).

            • First oil breathers already changed here in Italy and the same is happening in the UK...

Unfortunately no news for now about its efficacy and no pics to understand where they modified it...

              • Is it true you need to leave the original oil in there until the first 15000/1 year service? I would of thought there would be that many metal particles from run in sitting in the oil wouldnt be a good thing going through the engine... Most other cars I have heard change out in the first 5000. My dealer advised me to leave it in there (car arrives in 3 weeks).

Is there any technical reasoning behind this? (they just said it is special oil, in which I doubt could do the job of run in AND a higher performance engine oil for twincharged motor...)

                • Because the motor is pre-run in before it leaves the factory, hence most of the additional junk that you might get should be caught by the oil filter.

I changed mine out at 6000kms too see what the oil was like (black as diesel oil with a slight gritty feel) and also to get rid of the Castrol Crap they put in them.

I've always changed the factory oil at around 1,000km in our cars incl. 2012, 2010 Tiguans and I never had to top up oil between the oil changes or had any oil usage issues. Though, I'm not saying that this is the cure to Polo engines problem with higher than normal oil usage.

I'm also starting to suspect to think that the Castrol oil is a bit funny.
I haven't changed my oil yet (currently at 6000km), but I've been topping up with the Penrite oil. Topped with around 1L four times (total 4L so far), and I've noticed that the car is MUCH less sooty at the exhaust. Don't know if it's due to the running-in or from the topping up with Penrite. After reading how people that received top-ups from VW still tend to burn oil/soot problems, could there really be something?

                      What do you guys think?

                      • I asked some news in a German forum about the breather modification, here's the answer:
After nearly 800 kilometers driven after the conversion, I can only see with a lot of goodwill and most exact measurement of an oil consumption might max ~ 100ml, say, it has helped!
From a software update was never mentioned, and it was not done at my local dealer.
                        Power is still enough there.

Here's a pic of the engine, no visible modifications to the pipe...
In the German forum they are talking about a different inner section of the pipe.

Honestly, the only time mine has ever truely burned through the oil is when the motor has Castrol oil in it. When I first topped it up, I used Liqui-Moly and the next time, i will be giving Shell Helix Ultra Extra a go because this is what I topped up with the first time and I could see it was different compared to the factory fill stuff when i dropped the oil at 6000kms.
