Ooo...I was looking at these wheels as well. Can I ask where are you sourcing your replicas and how much? PM me if you prefer.

Also thinking about 18" matte black TSW Mallory 5 (Mallory 5 Alloy wheels in matte black and silver w/ mirror cut face by TSW | www.TSW.com) for my CW GTI

        • They were one of the wheels I was looking at too. Love the concave but thats what turned me off them not knowing what they looked like to suit the Polo.

          Shoot me a PM mate

          • Didn't realise they were staggered fitment so I now have 9inch wide rears lol

Anyone know how tight its going to be? 9inch with a 38 offset. Should be fine but might need to get the tyre shop to do a few test fits with different tyres.

Fwoaaaar....sorry to be the bearer of bad news but 9inch et38 will seriously poke out more than you want but not only that, your car is lowered so you are met with a conundrum I'm afraid.

              • Worked it out as 32mm more outwards and 18mm inwards over standard.
There's a fair gap atm (about 20-25mm) from wheel face to guard so hopefully there isn't too much "poke". I'll do a trial fit minus tyres on the weekend and see what im working with.

                • I understand the numbers and the gap you presently have ...but its just not that simple. Forget about the tyres for now because they'll most likely be narrower and stretched anyway but the 9inch rim itself poking out that far will absolutely give you massive headaches because of how low your car is...and it is low.

An 8inch ET35 wheel isn't even flush with the gti guards, it marginally pokes out too....just anyway.

                  ET46 (stock 7inch wheels) + 8mm to get ET38 (new 9inch wheels) + 25mm for extra inch on outer edge = 33mm further out.

Those online offset calculators are a piece of crap too because they don't take into account, one, two and three piece wheel configurations which can all have different offsets for different widths for different lips and barrels. I learned a heap about all this through liaising with an experienced consultant from (insert bespoke wheel company here). This is why I'm going bespoke on my new DPE wheels as I want them to fit the car, suspension, guards and brakes to the absolute millimeter. I want the perfect stance and a ride setup which looks great but doesn't prevent me from some spirited driving now and then.

I'm waiting with interest to see how you go but what are your chances of returning the rears for the right size?

While we're on the subject, how would 17x7.0 ET35 wheels go on the GTI?

In terms of fitment under the guards, that's no different to the stockies with an 11mm spacer, which many have done.

If that's the spec of an aftermarket wheel you're looking at, then why even upgrade to a wheel that's the same width as stock, but change only the ET?

Maybe it's just to get a wider track but then you may as well just go to 8inch ET38...its a much better set up. Unless of course the wallet is a little light and you got a bargain somewhere.

                        • talking of spacers... if you have the spacer welded to the wheel is it then legal as it cannot move and snap bolts etc? If so you can paint/powder over it and not get pulled, just a thought?

I doubt it's legal because it's not considered an original piece of the manufactured wheel...much like adding a fake blower to the top of your engine...like the XC coupe in mad max

                            • I had a look through austlii (database of legislation & court cases), the RTA vehicle standards and the ADR's for info on wheel spacers.

In NSW the directive is that the Wheel Track must not be increased to more than 25mm more than the maximum allowable by the vehicle manufacturer: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registrati...vsi09_rev4.pdf

The Australian Design Rules say: Wheel spacers (or adaptors for dual wheel conversions) between the wheel mounting face and the road wheel must not be used unless fitted as original equipment by the vehicle
                              manufacturer. ( http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa..._2011%20v3.pdf )

My last car had wheel spacers as standard, so technically I could put whatever spacer necessary on it to increase wheel track to 25mm bigger than stock (effectively a 30mm spacer).

I haven't got my polo yet but i'll hazard a guess that they don't have spacers as stock. If they don't then it'd be illegal to add them.

To get a defected the officer would have to know they weren't there as standard, so if they're subtle enough you'd get away with it.
