New Passat 206TSI R-Line

In the Mode menu... if you have the car in 'Sport', you get the 'Sports' exhaust, which is a touch louder. From memory, you can also set up your personal set-up with sports exhaust. I found it barely noticeable!

A few posts back, there were photos of flaps on the outer exhausts of the quad exhaust setup. I assume this has something to do with it.

I've been using Eco lately. Anything other than that and I get 14L/100kms... in traffic the other day, even in Eco, I was getting 14L...

That's a little concerning. Do you have a heavy right foot? I live in the middle of a city. 15km trek to work in moderate traffic and I average about 9L /100 kms. On long trips I'm getting 7-8ish (I do quite a few). I have been pushing the car a bit. I did disable stop/start permanently. I've got nearly 6000kms on mine already.

There are two mufflers either side on the Passat 206 which go into a larger single and then a resonator that also looks somewhat larger than one in a Golf R. You could try just the resonator delete and see how it goes. Otherwise you'll need to do a full catback. Unfortunately because these cars aren't sold in the USA, there aren't a lot of cheap options, only expensive ones from Euro tuning houses.

Overall average showing so far using phone app is 8.9L/100ks, gets under 7 on the motorway/long trips and does about 8.5 to 9 around town. I never use the economy setting because the freewheeling annoys me and does create hesitancy with the DSG which I don't like. Never use auto stop start either. I use 98 octane fuel, whether that makes any difference, because it's cheap at my local Mobil and that's all they have.

Noise wise mine makes the same fart sound as the other VWs do when you you are giving it some i.e above 3000rpm gear changes and also blips the throttle on down changes when in sport mode too? Car is so quiet otherwise and exhaust further away so harder to hear unless windows open or radio off though....

OK this is very timely.

I have just driven to from Melbourne to Noosa and Back over the last couple of weeks. Car was fully loaded in the boot. I have a large rhino rack roof pod 550L two teenage kids and wife. I guess I really tested it to the max for capacity.

Today I drove from Newcastle to Melbourne. I used economy mode and ACC (Cruise control) set at 103 - 113km per hour most of the way. I never accelerated hard at all. The best I could get was 8.1 L/100ks. All in all i think that's not bad for a fully loaded machine.

Just for interest sake.... I also had the pod mounted on VW original roof bars. They are very quiet. No whistle at all. I would definitely recommend them. The have some deflectors on the bottom of the front one and you can also open the sunroof fully. Not that I ever did this.

Just in case there are any nice Police people on this forum ... My wife took the shots....

Had the car about 6 weeks now and very happy....

Jammed to phone up into the bumper to see properly here is the part looks like it's not a VW part but from what I saw of the euro tow bars they have auto drop down ones so maybe there isn't a "factory" one in Aus it's dealers fitting a local component ?

Thank you. Dealer adjusted the contract. Told me it is genuine, just doesn't have a part number or something in the system. He included a note stating it's genuine.



Also, am I the only one that isn't miffed that the car doesn't sound like it's going to be too loud? I should be getting mine on Tuesday!

I believe this is more or less a Sydney traffic issue....... I average 12.5l going to and from work in normal sydney traffic. (mean... bumper to bumper, avg 15 -25km/h).

during the double dermit period, I have used Eco mode (to ensure I dont get myself into trouble) and average around 9l doing the same route with no traffic on the road.

Last fill, with a mix of freeway and town returned just under 10L/100kms... but that was Eco full time and 90% highway driving. I would have expected a bit lower... but I guess you can't have everything!

I assume you're using 98 Ron and not some ethanol blend?

I did a bit of an experiment yesterday... we took it over the Snowy Mountains Highway! Eco versus Sport...no bloody difference to average fuel use! Both were doing around 8.8L/100kms (it was VERY hilly!). Sport was much better for throttle response and handling etc. Eco only seems to work around town...

It seems to be improving... especially when I'm not stuck on Parramatta Rd in peak hour! I wonder if it just needs to loosen up a bit... perhaps the engine was a bit tight, she's only just clicked over 3,000kms.

If you're using anything like E10 or E85 (don't even know if our cars can run it) then you'd have higher consumption.

It would be nice to have a sport mode without the stupid sports style gear changes (revs too much). I think I'll get one of those DSG tunes to fix that.

You can use E10 apparently... I found the German website reference for it. United sells 95RON E10... I know it has a lower calorific value per litre, but I wouldn't expect 14L/100kms difference! From memory, those were on regular 95RON tanks though.

The first thing I do when I put it in sport, is to pull the selector down when in 'D' to disengage the Sports ('S') gear change for the regular ('D') changes. It's great after that...

OK so there's no magic button to push to get an exhaust note that we were missing.

And I know what you mean this is an R-line model and not an R, so it a luxury model with sports trim rather than a "proper" sports model.

Nothing that a trip to the exhaust shop couldn't fix. However it is a little disappointing given that it's already a $65k car.

I went for a test drive the other day as I need to replace my Scirocco. while I enjoyed the drive I felkt the car lacked some of the theatre I was looking for given the similar engine in the Roc and the 206. While sports mode makes the exhaust louder none of what I call the theatre of the drive has been programmed into the Passat. I was told that the blips and farts of the Golf are have been programmed out of the 206TSI.

An Audi S3 sedan will be my next drive once I get through negotiating a price and choosing a colour. Did enjoy the Passat though.

My old R36 off the line was really good and responded to the throttle quite nicely. This new wagon, no matter how hard I mash the throttle there's about a 1.5-2 second delay before it's actually hoofing along.

Has anyone else noticed this or found it a problem?

It's fairly normal. It's the downside of a 2.0L with a biggish turbo. It could be something to do with the DSG limiting itself as well. Try turning off auto hold putting the car in S and changing manually (just as a test) I know the box goes into neutral on auto hold and it could be causing more of a delay as well.

So yes, I have the same experience as you. I have 4000k's on mine now but I must say it's not always an obvious delay. I think S mode makes the delay slightly less. If you want some more oomph, have a JB1 or JB4 installed. You will not be disappointed. A DSG tune could be an option but it may bring up a TD1 fault and cause warranty issues.
