Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Thanks for your replies guys.
Why?...keeping things simple and familiar I guess, I should check it out before I start asking questions shouldn't I.
    cheers.

One query I have is with the ACC. It seems to detect vehicles in the adjacent right-hand lane, as well as vehicles directly in front. If the lane ahead is clear, but there is a vehicle in the adjacent right-hand lane (just ahead of me), the dash graphics show this and the ACC won't accelerate past it. Almost as if it's set not to overtake on the inside of another vehicle.

Anyone else experienced this? Any way to turn it off in the settings?

      Cheers, Sam.
Welcome. Hope you enjoy your nice new ride!

As for your other bit. Undertaking on motorways/freeways is illegal in most European countries. I believe it is also technically illegal under some conditions in Australia, such as overtaking lanes and certain motorways/freeways. It is a bit of nuisance but like another member has said, just hit "RES +" and it will override it, the disadvantage is that you go up by 1km/hr. You can turn it off but only by disabling lane assist.

I said I didn't buy the 'big' engine for it to be dull from start.

He tells me he has a 'tuning mate' so we'll see what comes of that and what factory warranty comes from it

I'm not holding my breath, but I am looking forward to a drive in the Golf R to compare.

It definitely feels like sluggish clutch engagement because if i hit it hard it revs to 2500-3000 and slowly engages the clutch and then takes off.
Watch a couple of youtube videos on various dual clutch type setups, including some of the performance ones. You'll notice a bit of pickup lag/slip on brisk launches. I think it's a combination of this slip and a badly timed lag spot in the turbo spooling. Tuning would address this but it would most likely had to be both a gearbox and engine tune to sort it. VW should have made the "sport" program more like a Golf R in it's takeoff dynamics and then the normal sedate Passat mode in normal. Unfortunately it looks like we get "sedate passat" in normal mode and "sedate passat that likes to ring out the gears" in sport mode. The car is still quick, but it's not trying hard to be on the "R" side of the R-Line.

        • Yeah but even so speed wise, it is less than a second difference to 100kph between the heavier Passat and lighter and more powerful Golf R so while it is feeling slow to some of you is it really? I don't get how a heavier car with less power can be expected to be the same in launching feel and acceleration to to Golf R guys? It's not in the same space or class so were you expecting similar performance and are disappointed? It is still faster than a Golf GTI and Golf Anniversary to 100kph and I'd say 80-120kph it probably is too so it's not outside what I was expecting.
Maybe the newer ones needs more KMs or something to bed in the clutch and the car lets itself behave differently after a certain period as mine goes pretty good from a standing start in all modes (15,000kms) compared to other cars too so.....presume Oz spec cars are same as kiwi ones?

          • There are settings within the diffs that can be changed with vcds to make this better. But even with this changed my mate flogged me in his golf r when we played the other day. It was disgraceful

Fair enough with the real life comparo Golf R vs this. VW quotes 5 sec vs 5.7 sec to 100kph though so maybe that is BS because it would be hard to notice the difference in real life.
But at Golf's 1435 kg vs Passat's 1589 kg (1639 wagon) that was always going to be the case. Golf R's here have 20 HP more too as well as the extra 30 NM torque. To match more performance orientated cars in a straight line this thing needs a chip or box to make Kgs per Hp comparable but then the handling deficit is always going to be there too.
It's a really only a Grand Tourer, not an RS4 or even S4 out of the box.

                  • Yes! Yes! Yes! I agree with EVERYTHING in this review!

I was reflecting just yesterday... if anything happened to our 206 (like hitting a kangaroo!), I'd probably just go out and order the exact same car...

                    • Thanks for your replies 206Harvard and Chopper. So far it's the only local review and a thorough one at that.

Congrats on picking up your new Passat today 206Harvard. Let us know your impressions.

Ordered mine 24th November last year and I'm still waiting. It has actually arrived in Australia and is currently at Patrick Stevedores in Laverton. I've been advised there's a backlog of 2000 cars requiring fumigation and compliance certification. Apparently all new cars get inspected and fumigated in case of undesirable bacteria. Once all this is done, car goes to the dealer to get the after market stuff done to it. Upshot is I can expect delivery late this month or early February.

Actually talked to the dealer today about extended new car warranty. Finance guy handling this claims the Passat comes with a 3 year / 100,000 km warranty. I told him that can't be right as on Volkswagen's website it states unlimited ks. Who's right here? Please advise.

Anyway, he's quoted me $2385.75 for the Volkswagen New Vehicle Extended Warranty Insurance consisting of an extra 2 years / 100,000 ks. The next one up is for 2 extra years and unlimited ks priced at $2651. Told me these prices include a 20% discount because I'd be buying this upfront rather than later. I pointed out it couldn't be purchased later as on Volkswagen's website it states this has to be done prior to registration and delivery. No, he says it can be done at any time during the standard 3 year warranty, but will cost more.

Going to have to investigate this further ...

                      • So it is 3yrs unlimited Kms. Extended warranty can be taken up anytime during this period and it should be $2k

                        • Yep we picked up ours today..
Our car was already in Australia so we only had to wait two weeks for it to come from Brisbane to Sydney and then be prepared.
We traded a two year old golf highline for this car and as great a car the golf is....it's a toy compared to this.
This car has so much tech, much more than the golf, I doubt we will ever be a master of it all.
So far really enjoying the experience of having a grand tourer and looking forward to some long trips in the upcoming months.
Would be really useful for guys to relate their experiences and surprise findings....looking forward to that too.
                          Cheers.

Congrats! I'm still finding small things out about the car. If you have a look back at my posts from a few months ago, it outlines my first few days with the car!

                            • Went for a little drive yesterday, a mix of most conditions and I'm very happy overall with the way it drove.

The power delivery is deceiving, the car is relatively quiet except for a little exhaust growl whilst accelerating from stop, before you know it 70kph is on the dial, something I'll have to watch.

I want to check out the different drive modes to see what happens with them, everything is set to "normal" at the moment.
