  • Extended Warranty option for 2015 VW Passat Wagon 118TSI

    Hi all,

I have a 2015 Wagon Passat 118TSI and currently has reached the end of the manufacturer warranty. I have been approached by the dealar where I bought the car from and get the car serviced so far with, they offerred me an extended warranty for another 3 years that "matches" the manufacturer warranty. They said normal price is $2,400 but they are running promotion for $1,795.

I said "matches" because I belive it won't match 100% and obviously they cap each claim to $5,000. I requested a PDS and I also found some discrepancies in what the guy said in email to what the PDS says. And currently my car needs some repair (under manufacturer warranty) and I am not too happy with the service delivered by the dealer. In short, I am not comfortable to go with the dealer's warranty.

I rang VW asking about my option but because the warranty has ended early this month, VW said that they can't offer me anything. Which somewhat disappointing given that VW has never approached me toward the end of warranty period offering an extension to my warranty.

Anyway, right now I am in the market for an extended warranty for my VW. I heard people talking about Allianz and Swann but tried to Google it and could not find a link where I can buy them. I also come across RedBook. I don't know if there is anyone here who has experience with RedBook extended warranty.

I could use some feedback/advice. Thank you.

The Allianz-underwritten VW extended warranty is about the best you can get, and the closest to new-car warranty on the market.

You're not tied to the dealer to maintain this warranty, nor are you forced onto a different, watered-down service schedule.

Speak to a company like Leaseworks. They offer multiple 'warranty' products from multiple underwriters.
I'm sure you can find something suitable for you.
As Umai Naa!! has said you will probably find that the Allianz product most closely matches a factory warranty.

Hi Umai Naa!! I have contacted VW and they can't sell me an extended warranty as my 3 yrs manufacturer warranty has expired earlier this month.

I wonder if I can buy direct from Allianz.

Ah, righto. I didn't realise the existing warranty has already lapsed. That's a pain.

Yeah I know ... unfortunately VW didn't proactively sent a reminder and offer this extension

You can buy the same product from Allianz after market.
I previously compared the PDS from the VW extended warranty and the aftermarket Allianz product and they were near identical, as the VW extended warranty was underwritten by Allianz (this was a few years ago, you would need to confirm this is still the case).

Thanks @kamold. Wondering if you have a link to Allianz after market handy. I tried googling "Allianz after market car warranty" but doesn't seem there is any link from within Allianz website turned up. warrantyandinsurance.com.au turned up ... do I have to go through third party to buy that warranty? Thanks.

As far as I remember you can only buy it through brokers.
Talk to Kerry at Leaseworks and she will be able to send you out the PDS.

Extended Car Warranty Insurance| Allianz Swann|Warranty & Insurance

I went with these guys when looking to cover my new Passat 206TSI sedan just before I picked it up in January 2017. To be sure, your car is now out of warranty, but they do offer an extended used car warranty.

Following is the pertinent information via email relating to my B8 Passat:

The Eric policy allows for 200,000 total klms from new, so this means that if your vehicle had 45,000klms when the policy starts, you have 155,000klms to travel over the time period.

The policy replicates the manufacturer's warranty, has no excess or individual claim limits (up to purchase price), is transferable to new owners and can be cancelled with pro rata refunds if no claims have been made. You can service the vehicle at any licensed mechanical workshop or dealer, your choice, and you must continue to service in accordance with the log book schedule.

Eric 5 Star Platinum (A) Warranty (200,000klm limit)
                    2 year - $1910
                    3 year - $2110
                    4 year - $2700
                    5 year - $2900

                    Good Luck!

Thank you. I will get a quote from Leaseworks and warrantyandinsurance.com.au.

Do I expect to pay more because it is now under used car extended warranty or do I expect to have covered less? I read in warrantyandinsurance.com.au that they only pay 100% of the repair on some type of works, not every repair.

And has anyone got experience or heard about RedBook extended warranty? Their underwriter is Virginia Surety

I sent a web enquiry to warrantyandinsurance.com.au. Got a call back from david at coveru.com.au. Got the following prices for my Passat Alltrack Wolfsburg on the "Eric 5 Star Platinum A Warranty" up to 200k km.

                        3yr $1665 (3yr VW + 3yr extended warranty, 200k km total limit)
                        4yr $2165 (3yr VW + 4yr extended warranty, 200k km total limit)
                        5yr $2395 (3yr VW + 5yr extended warranty, 200k km total limit)

You can get the 5 Star Plan A warranty insurance for any car up to 5yrs old and less than 100k km. The main difference between Eric & Allianz warranty insurance is that Allianz claim limit is market value of car, whilst Eric is purchase price. Allianz is also more expensive (he is going to send me an Allianz quote for comparison). If your car is out of manufacturers warranty, then a waiting period/no claim period will apply.

I got quotes for Eric from Leaseworks and coveru for similar price:

Leaseworks (Eric Platinum Warranty): 3yr $1,700
                          Coveru (Eric 5 Star Platinum A): 3yr $1,665

I assume they are the same? I check the PDS, they are similar, but not identical. I am not sure if this is two different products by Eric.

For example on the maximum benefit:

                          Leaseworks (Eric Platinum Warranty)

The maximum amount payable by Us under this Policy(Maximum Policy Benefit) is limited to the Market Value ofVehicle irrespective of the number of claims.

Coveru (Eric 5 Star Platinum A)

The maximum amount payable by Us under this Policy (MaximumPolicy Benefit) is limited to the Purchase Price of Vehicle irrespectiveof the number of claims.

Also the one offered by Coveru includes Total Loss benefits while the one from Leaseworks doesn't.

Do you know if the exclusions between Eric and Allianz are similar?
