Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Congrats!

It's pretty common in cars now. VW have had it more than 10 years. One thing you might not know is that it also works with the lock button on all the doors as well.

Handy if you are like me and the key stays in your pocket.

    • Sold my Mk7 Golf R this morning. Went to the dealership down the road to look at a Passat Alltrack WBE or a Passat 206. They had neither in stock. I test drove a corporate car they had in the used lot. Manganese Grey Arteon with 5577km on the ODO, registered in Mar 2018 first time but a 2017 build MY2018.

Fully loaded with sunroof, dynaudio, 20” wheels. Bought it for $58k no more to pay. Fully transfered into my name, and new car factory warranty to end Sept 2021. I’m happy with the deal. Collect it Wednesday.

Think it was a press car, judging by the rego sequence compared to press cars on YouTube. All in good condition so WTF its better than paying full retail or close to. Nice car.

      • Congrats on the sale and purchase. I'm interested to hear your comparison of the two cars.

        • Same engine, very different character. Not the crazy rush you can get from the Golf R but an appropriate maturing of the overall approach that is more of a fit for me now...

Will know more when i get a longer drive up to the central coast on Thursday...

          • So... a rock just slammed into my driver window from a passing lorry and caused a huge crack. It would have no doubt shattered if not for the tinting.

FYI, the VW service quoted $620 for parts and labour. Crikey.

            • Suspect the dual pane laminated front windows have more to do with the reason this didn't shatter. Tinting would only stop the shattered pieces of glass fly around. Lucky you had the window up.......maybe the truckie should pay the bill.

              • Yeah you're right, that rock was aimed straight for my head!

                • My first service is booked in for next month.

They put my VIN into some VW system and it came back that I required the front bumper clips recall. If anyone is due for a service at any stage I recommend asking them to check your VIN in the system way before the service to ensure they have the parts.

I was told I didn't need or already had the lane assist update.

I've also noted for them to check the drivers window and sunroof creek. See what they say.

Thy noted that the dash software will get the latest update.

                  • So.…. did you guys know this? I only just worked this out.

If you open your boot/tailgate, and if you press the button here (the number 2 button) - you've got 20 seconds to get out of the way and if you do in time, the boot will close itself.

It's handy for when you need to get things out of the boot that require both hands, and you can't close the tailgate by pressing the button (button 1), or by using the keyfob.

Does it also lock the car? Or do you need to manually lock the car first before pressing it?

Can confirm it leaves the car in whatever state it was in. So if the doors are unlocked, it leaves it that way. If the doors are locked, you can open the boot - press the button and it'll close the boot (leaving the doors in the locked state).

                          • Small update from my 12month service.

They replaced some front bumper clips under warranty.

They cleaned and dry-lubricated the sunroof and under the front top drives windowseal. The 'creeking' from both the sunroof and drivers window has disapeared for now.

They cleaned my car despite me asking plenty of times and noting on down not to. Next time I will but a sign up on my windscreen.

There is absolutely no way they inspected anything on the car even in the slightest and did the absolute minimums (changed the oil). They left the dashcam plugged in and I watched everything on fast forward.

Just a heads up, if you are doing a lot of towing a DSG/DCT is not recommended. There is a heap of information about it online you can read/watch but you should treat the DSG as a manual gear box and constant towing with low speed manoeuvres should be avoided.

That isn't to say that you shouldn't get an Arteon, just that if you are doing a lot of low speed towing manoeuvres be prepared for the DSG to wear much quicker.
I towed with a 6 speed/diesel DSG for maybe 50,000 kms with no issues mostly up around 115-120 kph. Just my experience, others might have had a different one.

You can most definitely do it, it is just not recommended. What I would say is, if you are towing a few times a week then you should look into a more suitable car/gearbox.
