  • If you're okay with buying second hand, the A5 3.0TDI surely would be similar price to a new Jeep GC. We recently picked up a 2011 A4 3.0TDI and couldn't be happier. Cost us 47k and it has S-Line interior and exterior, quattro, S-tronic (DSG), B&O sound, reverse camera, upgraded MMI, sunroof etc with 55k kms. Whilst the A5 is a bit more, a new GC is about 70k and you should be able to find a good example of an A5 within that price range

Issue is this will be a work car and they stipulate under 5 years and 140,000km. So really means I have to get a new/demo car.

If I don't want to tip in cash for the fuel bill I have to also get a car under 9.6l/100km as spec on the green vehicle guide.

I'll make sure I get all major repairs done on the Tig before giving it to my wife - brakes, tyres, timing chain, etc.

I know the thing won't blow up at 100,000km it's just that it's when the maintenance costs start adding up and a lot of people pull the plug before the major service, tyres, brakes and timing belts need to be replaced. It's the time when you either tip the cash in and keep it or you trade on a newer car.

Yeah the looks are a bit polarising on that one. Plus diesel 4x4 option isn't out yet. Petrol v6 is too thirsty and I'm not going with the 2.4 petrol 2wd as it lacks grunt and dirt/off road ability.

          • Have you considered an Amarok?
New, VW, 2.0TSI or the biturbo tdi?
            RWD or AWD.

I did have a bit of a look at the Amaroks. Petrol only comes in RWD. Though I think I'm after passenger vehicle rather than commercial/utility. Touareg would be nice but prices start around $70k and I'm trying to stay within what I get for my car allowance through work. Passat is a bit old and the only AWD options are the V6 or Alltrack. So at the moment in the VAG range there's not a nice fit for what I'm looking for.

              Here's my list/criteria:
              • AWD
              • under 9.6l/100km
              • ideally a bit more backseat room than the Tig
              • $50k (max)
              • decent performance/interior
              • wife approval

You wouldn't have though it was too hard. Of course the last item on the list is the hardest

Except for the size, it's almost the exact same criteria I had when I bought the Tig. Also the budget was a bit tighter 3 years ago as I was buying 2x cars and this time we're doing the swap around so we're a little more freed up on what I can spend. Kids are growing up so we need a bit more space. But when you get down to it there's really not a lot that excites me about driving a Kia, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Hyundai or a Daewoo with a Holden badge.

The Alltrack is on my long list... but have to sneak this one past the wife and tell her it's not a wagon. The only problem with the Alltrack is it's a bit of a niche car in the same space as the XC70, Subaru Outback, Audi Allroad which is being eaten into by all the SUV's. I reckon VW are only hanging onto the Alltrack because they don't have a mid-sized SUV in the range.

I'd really suggest you go and have a look at an Amarok at least. BiTDI or TSI, both are good.

-TBH a RWD with a mechanical diff-lock is 90% as capable as an AWD off-road if driven well so don't worry about that.
-Ground clearance on the Amarok is huge compared to a Jeep and a Tiguan
-All of the Amarok's, petrol included are sub 9.6l/100km
                      -back seat space is huge
-with an appropriate discount <$50K very easy depending on model
-performance is OK and with a tune excellent (BiTDI ~8.5s 0-100, TSI ~6.5s 0-100)
-interior is typically VW and most un-ute like, you need to have a look.
-wife approval is the issue I suppose, but you never know, she may like it when she sees it up close

As a bonus you can load lots of stuff on the back including camping gear/kids bikes etc and have room left over.

And finally, none of the notorious Jeep reliability issues plague the Amaroks ......

In reality I've got the car to where I am happy with it and now getting a little bored to be honest. I think keeping it as a stage 2 "sleeper" for my wife is a pretty good option to be honest. It's going to have the majority of the mods still on it - just taking off the bits that my wife doesn't like/won't use - including the black plasti-dip on the front grille

I'm actually tossing up getting a car that I won't be encouraged to mod and spending my time/energy on other possibly more productive things. I have enjoyed it. It has been a bit self-indulgent. Could you call it a mid-life crisis - quite possibly. Has it been fun - yes. If I was in the same situation would I do it again - absolutely!!!!

Anyway it's time for a new chapter and if I can help a few people out with some parts to build their dream cars all the better

Wonder if you can beat my 169 days of sensibility..

Have you considered if any of the children are a bit more of a hassle then perhaps 'losing' one somewhere and solving the space issue that way?
