Intend having mine looked at with the fast approaching 30000k service. I can notice a rattle under acceleration, particularly with windows down & somewhere the sound can bounce off something nearby (wall, tunnel, etc).
I think the high pitch, low volume whistle is normal.
No, definitely not normal as only noticed it for first time after having travelled 1000k or so. Has since gone away also - would have thought it would be there constantly if normal. Have also noticed a "rattle & clunk" noise coming from same area about 3-5sec after switching off (like a ball bearing falling into shallow plastic cup) - any ideas?

the whine should be normal and typically heard under hard acceleration. youtube GTI whine and compare it to yours.
I too notice the sound you describe, definately wouldnt have noticed it unless you pointed it out. Sounds like something dropping into a plastic cup or something a few seconds after switching off. its very subtle and can be easily mistaken for rattling keys etc but its definately the same noise every time after switchin off so i presume its normal probably can bus powering down or something. Might be something to as VAG.

Hi TDZ, good to know I'm not only one! I think my whine might have been different - more whistle than whine and was very noticeable. Hasn't come back so (touch wood) nothing to worry about. My biggest concern was that unfiltered air being sucked into manifold (as described in previous post). Am presuming engineers wouldn't allow dust to go straight into engine though?! On another topic, found the sport mode (so that's what "S" is - duh), and she goes hard. Amazing for 2 ltr!

Well after numerous f&*k ups by a dealer who shall remain nameless I finally got my waste gate fix done. Yes it works and no more rattle! YAY! Pity we had to wait 2 years plus for this............................

lucky you Pullstarter, my local dealer has decided to ignore me completely now... have emailed them twice asking for an update on whether Perth has the fix and informing them that its available over east already and some other minor issues with the car and no response been about 2 weeks since the first email was sent....
Yeah I get that sound after shutting off too, I figured it was just something powering down?
Waste gate fix day tomorrow
i could well be wrong but am pretty sure that is just a system built in which continues to gently cool the turbo (if need be) after engine is shut down? kind of like a factory turbo timer?

I'd be getting in contact with VWA straight away. Just because they're in a different part of the country doesn't mean your dealer can ignore a nation wide service bulletin.

How can this be f&*ked up more than once & why has 4 1/2 weeks gone by since it was supposed to be done? Is it a difficult procedure?
Not a difficult procedure at all, extremely simple actually. The first time was in order to identify the fault but of course they had no parts in stock. The second time I took it in for them to fix it they said the part was "damaged in transit" i.e. they forget to order it and no one bothered checking before my appointment so I went in there for no reason (of course this didn't come to light until they'd had the car for the whole day and I returned to find the job not done). They then said they'd make it a "priority" and would call me as son as the part was here. Of course they didn't call me and I had to call up myself after waiting a further two weeks. They then didn't have any timeslots available for another 2 weeks.
So all in all they suck big nuts. But eventually it was done. I'm glad I don't get my servicing done there. I certainly won't be buying my next VW from them either.
It sounds like the time we live in, mate. Telstra is fixing my broadband from June and every week they call me that they're going to escalate it to a higher level.

Yes ... don't get me started!
Send Thodey over, after he's finished fixing your place.
