  • Wastegate rattle can now be fixed!

Well at last! Australian VW dealers are now doing the waste gate rattle fix so you won't have that annoying rattle between 2000rpm and 3000rpm. Mine's booked in for 2 weeks time but be prepared to make 2 visits. They wont do the fix unless you take the car in for them to listen to it and the parts are in Singapore so you'll have to wait for at least 2 weeks after they diagnose the sound to get it fitted.

Anyway, about damned time! Only waited 2.5 years for this!

Which models/year models does this affect?

Pretty much every TSI, a few lucky ones don't get the noise for some unknown reason.

I'll have to keep an ear out. I know you said the sound occurs at 2000-3000rpm, can you describe the found any more?

Touch wood I'm one of those lucky ones.

Stupid question ... but will the stealers here recognise that TSB number listed within your link?

Not sure Aussie, it may be different country to country? But they certainly know about the issue and that the fix is now available in au.

How much is the fix? is it free? driving my tig today i definately noticed the sound described, but originally thought it was the noisy TSI engine/turbo spool.

would be great if it was, but i wouldn't be surprised if they did charge considering its technically not a mechanical fault.

Hey guys. This is from the Golf MK6 forum, but I made a post here summarising the solution, part information and cost, and the fact it's covered by VAG under warranty for parts and labour.

                    Here's a copy:

Here is a summary of the information:

                    VGA TPI: 2021062/7
Warranty Status: Where problem can be demonstrated, part & labour covered.
                    Part Number: 06J145220A
                    Description: Clip
AU List Price: ~$78.95 + GST
                    Labour: ? Hrs

A reminder of what it looks like and where it installs:

Thanks to everyone who has provided information, researched this issue, and especially those who have spent time visiting dealers and those dealers who took it on themselves to get in the parts and test the fix even before VGA acknowledged it. Cheers.

Clever aren't they. Before anyone starts commenting on the price of the clip; bear in mind that a lot thinking had to go into this solution and therefore logically the price of the clip has to reflect that.

Besides, it is made out of the Titanium, which obviously the picture doesn't show.

                        hrmmm interesting...

I sent off an email to VW dealer in Perth this morning regarding the fix (also included photo and TPI number) and just got the following response.

"It is a fix in the USA and UK but Volkswagen Australia have not brought in this fix yet. My regional manager knows about this but has told us not to implement this repair as of yet."

Perth must be a little late coming to the party

Tell them that VAG certain is aware of it, and have authorised it's installation in numerous Golf GTI's around the country already...

Mine's booked in for next week here in the ACT and yes it's covered under warranty. I'd be calling VWA and telling them what your dealer said.

Hi all. Haven't noticed that one on mine (yet) but thanks for heads-up. On the subject of strange engine noises, has anyone noticed a whistling coming from intake manifold when engine up to temp? Had it last week, but couldn't find a cause. Has since gone away and the only thing I can put it down to is some sort of one-way valve sticking and allow a small amount of air to by-pass. Does anyone know what the little tube is that's on the side of manifold - is open to atmosphere, and there is suction into the manifold (presume some sort of cold start aid?)
