Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Each time i go out i learn a bit more about the course and how the car goes.

I have some further information that the Lotus was an Exige S (supercharged) which puts out 163kw and weighs 933 kg
that would be a laugh in the TDI, although I could save a lot of weight by just leaving 5 litres of fuel in the tank - that'd still give me enough for a few hours track time I reckon

Really gees me up to getting something to thrash around there though.

I averaged 20l/100km for the track session and it was 47.5km of driving.

We had a Mk3 golf diesel out there one time and there was a Mk1 golf out there this time.
It's not all aobut massive power since it's not timed so you can't work out if you are doing better or not.

It's more about getting out and having fun in a controlled environment

When i saw you had 2 x 14 min vids up, i thought "i'll just have a quick look at a few minutes of each of these" but found them captivating & enjoyed both all the way through!
Have felt that 'steering wheel wrench' thing a few times, didn't realize it was the traction control working... Good to know!
Any Melb's know if they have these sort of events at Sandown or Calder Pk or Phillip Island?
Also, Clay, have you ever considered a short-shift mechanism?
Cheers, Thanks for sharing the video!

Drew, I organise them through Lakeside Raceway for the Watercooled forum.
There is a thread in the events section however the next one already has 13 people on the reserve list :|
I will let you know when i organise the next one though.
And you are free to come along and spectate/photograph/passenger if you like.

I didn't realise the steering wheel wrench was the traction control either until i turned it off.

I have entertained the idea but hadn't found anything suitable before i bought my place and am now spending money on the house rather than the car.
The engine mount does seem to make it a slot slicker but the vibrations through the car were too much with the APR one.

Is that the torque arm insert i read about a while back?

Right... off on a minor tangent here! I have found my manual gearbox a little 'unforgiving' for want of a better word & have wondered if others do as well? Seems like you have to be fairly precise & use a little more clutch than what i am used to (manual driver for 30 years), with the gear change on my tiggy... Normal? I get a bit of a clunk, mainly from 1st to 2nd unless i more or less 'ride' the clutch for an extra ~ half a second or so.
Hard to explain, really, but has anyone else experienced something like this or have a suggestion?

Yes the torque arm insert is the one i am talking about.
APR's was a bit rough for me, i have heard black forrest industries and neuspeed may be softer.

I find it a lot better than other cars but all the others ones i have driven were older and had a worn out clutch haha

I've not experienced it between 1st and 2nd, but I do get it a lot between 2nd and 3rd. I find if the clutch isn't hard up against the floor right at the precise moment you change from 2nd to 3rd, she "clunks" into 3rd big time. I really have to concentrate changing 2nd to 3rd when I'm giving it a boot full now that's for sure.

Be very careful doing quick changes 2nd to 3rd on the manual boxes ...... I destroyed a clutch doing a quick change under full throttle.

                      • Hi team_v and the rest!

Just curious to know from u guys have the APR CAI or other types of straight thru intakes in ur Tigs, but was wondering if anyone of u took out the MAF plastic grid? I tried to take mine out but its hard not to break it as the grid itself is quite brittle and the four clips that hold it into the MAF is pretty tight. It appears that the only way to remove it is one way ie expect the grid to break.

                        Has anyone tried??

                        Happy Easter to all btw!

                        • Hi there team_v...first of all,im a huge fan of yours n greatly impressed with d mods n works u put on your tig...bravo!!
Recently i purchased a face lift tig 2012 model n starting a project on modding my tig too...
so far im more towards exterior mods as i put add in a front cf lip to my front,19" audi s5 rep wheels(soon to b replaced by Breyton BE GTS AV lightweight),eibach pro sport springs, caractere rear roof spoiler, painted d whole body white to match d body, rear remus exhaust tips n side air vent fenders...will get my ABT front grill on week 21st soon...
As for performance,im only restricted to mod those that can b hidden or removed in order to keep my 5yrs unlimited mileage warranty given by VW here...so far i've changed to K&N drop in filter,S3 intercooler n using a TMC piggyback to boost d hp n torque up to 25% on stock..
My questions to u would be...
                          1. Since u are on stage2,have u upgraded your brakes to BBK (forge,ap racing or brembo) for betting stopping power? im currently torn between buying a 355mm used forge bbk or a new set of golf R front n rear brakes...any suggestion on this?
                          2. considering getting my tig chipped to stage 1 either with APR,MTM or Revo...since u are on APR,how would u rate it? i prefer low to mid end torque n more in city cruising...is it smooth or does it make your ride judders/rough gear change?
                          3. I've been told there is an ongoing issue with APR intake having leakage on the breather, have u encounter any of those?
                          4. Do we need CAI to compliment stage 1? or CAI only needed once on stage2?
                          5. Any thoughts on sprint booster?

                          Thanks in advance team_v

I have the carbonio intake and that is all the intake mods i have done.
Apparently the mesh smoothes out the air turbulence so whatever gain you make by cutting it out may be negated by on-off air flow.

Glad you are enjoying the modding process, i love the look of yours.

                            To answer your questions:
                            1) I haven't uppgraded the brakes as the standard ones are working fine for now.
If i was to do anything i would get some sports oriented brake pads and better brake fluid (redline is meant to be pretty good)
Braided lines are meant to be better at keeping brake pressure as well.

                            2) I would rate the APR ecu upgrade very highly.
Torque is available very early and powers right on up to about 6k RPM.
It is smooth and with DSG should be a blast.

                            3) I have had no issue with the APR intake.
It should come with a mounting bracket that is specific for the Tiguan i believe.

                            4) I don't think the CAI is needed specifically for stage 1 or 2 but it is a cheap add on and it does give a bit more performance when you do get those upgrades.

                            5) I don't see the point of a sprint booster as stage 2 is already brutally quick, especially with DSG in sports mode on yours.
