Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • After market audio upgrades for the Tig

    Hi everyone,

The one option I didn't get is the Dynaudio sound system, I figured I could probably get something with a bit more punch in my 147 if I went aftermarket.

So am looking for some pictures and descriptions of what you fine people have done to option up your audio?

Also recommendations of installers who have already done work on a Tig so they don't stuff up my new toy!

    Thanks in advance

To be perfectly honest, i don't think you need to upgrade the stereo in a new car unless you are wanting 100% top notch sound quality.

The RNS510 or RCD500 in the 147 should provide ample sound quality, the dynaudio would just be overkill in my opinion.

Unless you only listen to ultimate bass songs at volume 40 with 12 subwoofers thumping in your boot, i really don't think you need to worry about an upgrade.

Well I've heard the stock system and it doesn't have the quality and loudness I'm after.

Treble was distorted at relatively mild volume, bass was almost non-existent.

For me the music I'm listening to whilst driving makes the experience, esp on long country drives.

My old Saab 93 got a $1500 audio makeover with a sub and upgraded speakers, I'm thinking my Tig deserves at least the same.

Just DON'T go for any of the cheap Chinese knockoffs. If you feel you need to upgrade (I have the RCD510 and it's by far the best sound system I've ever had) my suggestion would be to go for one of the known brand names and preferably have it installed by your VW dealer if possible to ensure that any problems are sorted under warranty etc. I also suspect that the cheap units have no better (and possibly worse) sound than the original. Just my 2 cents worth. IF you have a look on the VWVortex site you'll find a number of options people have fitted there.

        Cheers

Agree with Derek here. Add an amplifier and decent speakers etc to the RCD510 as some has done on here for a substantial improvement in sound.

Do a search for the thread with the info in it.

I got the sat nav model with all the bells and whistles, no way am I swapping the head unit!

I will add sub, speakers and amp - just need to know where they are all best hidden, what size speakers fit in the cavities etc.

I've searched the Audio forum with no luck....

              From Pullstarter's thread, 1st post

Stereo upgrade - Hertz 6" splits in front doors, Hertz 12" boxed sub in boot, Hertz 4 channel amp under seat. This system combined with the stock RCD310 absolutely rocks!! Very happy with it and all for just $1400 installed. Go see Tony at Doran Pro Audio, Bankstown, he does great work at fantastic prices, tell him Simon sent you

Had a look at that thread, my car is a 147 and I believe I won't be able to hide the amp under the seat - can someone confirm?

He said he put splits in the front, no idea what went in the back apart from the boxed sub which I assume is just sitting in the boot?

                *sigh*

I guess I'll just have to wait to see what little spaces and nooks will fit speakers!

Why not place the amp at the top of the front passenger footwell?

Have it floating on a support bolted to the top of the footwell with holes bored out of the suport for ventilation.

147 has the drawer under the front seat. Lose the drawer and there should be plenty of space for an amp.

Don't you lose the drawer under the seat when you get leather seats in the 147?

Note - I haven't got my car yet!

My stock system is the same (with the basic head unit) . Worse sound than on my previous 10 year old Subaru stock system. Treble VERY distorted on some tracks (especially piano and acoustic rock and I certainly don't listem to that kind of music at high volume). EXTREMELY disappointed in the quality and will also replace the sound system when I get around to it, as I can't bear to turn it on at the moment!

Have a 103tdi with leather seats and it has the passenger seat tray.

Only driver's seat loses the drawer with electric leather seats. Passenger seat still has the drawer. So lose this passenger seat drawer and you have the space required for the amp.

So - anyone selling a driver/passenger seat drawer...?

Sound quality from the stock radio Rxx-310 is average. But I find the aftermarket Chinese 9000-1 sounds great through the same speakers - which makes me think the fault is with the VW radios.

Would probably be the amplification stage, not the processing.
