Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Having a turbo car chipped is always worth the $$$$ The Tig is now driving the way I believe it should come from the factory considering its pedigree ..... (2.0T AWD)

Pretty much exactly what I expected

No idea yet, however, consider this, the Tiguan weighs only about 100kgs more than an Audi S3. The S3 makes 188kw/350NM and does 0-100km/h in 5.7s. The Tiguan (manual) makes 190kw/400NM so should be pretty close to that 5.7s ..........

    EDIT: S3 3dr = 1500kg, s3 5dr = 1530kg .... only 80kgs in there compared to the 5dr ........

To look at it from another perspective ..... any Golf GTI & R32 .... chipped or stock ...... would be left behind in a straight line ..... ..... closest competitors would be a R36 or a chipped Pirelli Golf .... but the chipped Pirelli would have problems putting all that power to the ground so I suspect the Tig would still have it .... .... something to be said for AWD ....

The thing slowing down the Tig from 0-100 is that bloody short first gear. You have about 1.2 seconds in first gear before having to get it into 2nd. Once in 2nd though, you're accelerating at a deceiving quick pace (that huge torque doing it's job) - and much to the rice racer's and BMW X brigade's consternation.

Pulling away from the traffic lights and stuff I prefer starting in D and then once off switching to S to aavoid using 1st gear altogether. U may get a quicker 0-100 doing that?

                • Been testing the pod filter I'm running atm. Am concerned about the intake temps. After 30mins drive air temps surrounding the pod is at 50d egrees c ....... Outside temp is 32 degrees.

Not too confident the pod is actually helping at all apart from a deeper intake noise and more audible diverter valve operation.....

Sealed CAIs such as the Carbonio or Modshack ones seem the only way to go I'm afraid .....

Have you measured temps at the filter yet Simon ?

                  • No I haven't Johan but i suspect it's fairly cool. Have you mounted it right behind the headlight? Seems to be quite a lot cooler there than behind the factory grille intake.

I noticed a slightly faster throttle response with the pod (mine is also sealed remember) but not really what you'd call a power increase. I was mainly after DV noise anyway

                    • just a few questions, with the chip does it cause any lag?
at what rpm does power kick in (or you have to slam on the accelerator hard)?
                      is it still responsive?
                      (refering to automatic BTW)

does the chip tweak any boost setting? my understanding is before increasing boost its ideal to replace intercooler air filter and exhaust.
what are factory boost set on?
what is boost set to after chipped?
GTI engine internals are recommended to what horsepower before internal works are needed?

                      • No noticeable difference in lag.

In the manual power kicks in about the same 2500rpm-ish

It's A LOT more responsive, even at lower revs

The chip increases boost but not positive by how much

Air filter and exhaust are not essential but if you want a few more kw's always nice to have

GTI internals are the same on the Pirelli GTI which can be safely and reliably run at 250-ish kw with chip, fmic, exhaust and intake.

                          In answer to your questions:

                          1. There is no more lag than std.
                          2. Have a look at the power curve on APR's website, power starts early, @2500rmin you're looking at 400NM
                          3. It is much more responsive than before.
                          4. Boost is upped to around 1bar. Factory boost is around 0.6bar
                          5. There is no need to replace anything with only the chip done. Intercooler, intake and exhaust are all stage 2 items.
                          6. The TSI Tiguans all run Mk6 Golf GTI engines already. No internal changes are necessary until you go beyond 300kw. Even the APR Stage 3 kit has no internal engine work and it makes about 300kw.

Tiguan tuning stages typically would be the following:

                          Stage 1 = ECU only = 190kw/400NM
Stage 1+ = ECU + any 1 or 2 of upgraded FMIC, intake & exhaust
                          Stage 2 = ECU + upgraded FMIC, intake & exhaust = 210kw/430NM
                          Stage 2+ = Stage 2 + Audi S3 (K04) Turbo upgrade = 240kw/450NM
                          Stage 3 = Stage 2 + big turbo upgrade + a few other extras = 280kw/500NM
And beyond = Engine inernals & even bigger turbo = 350+kw

You just need to add delete the "I, II, III" depending on the stages you have.
