Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • CTHD Engine Replacement - Did I just get screwed?

I recently purchased a used 2013 Tiguan 118TSI 1.4L CTHD. Bad idea... Piston failure... I wish I had noticed when I first inspected the vehicle.

I was recommended a wrecker by my mechanic - he sold me a replacement engine (supposedly a 2016 CTHD engine with 42k on the clock)... He recommended another mechanic to do the job who specialises in engine replacements on Euro cars. During the engine replacement mechanic told me the Flywheel and Clutch needed doing...

    So lots of $$ later....

I collected the car and it drives well now. I opened the engine bay and noticed the engine looked fairly grubby with some signs of age. Possibly not stored well I thought. I noticed a ticking sound... The dreaded ticking sound. Not very prominent, but it's there for sure.

I checked the sticker on the side of the engine (the timing cover I believe). It says....

    CAV 076 460 - 13-03-09

To me that says it's a 2009 CAV model!!!!! The dreaded doomed CAV model.... Oh no....

Is there another way to confirm the engine model and manufacture date before I go through the hell of fighting the mechanic or wrecker? I need to get my facts straight first.

This has been a horrible experience. I feel pretty deflated at this point.

Is it possible that this timing cover was removed from your old engine and fitted to the new engine? The bolts look like they have been tampered with as they are a big scratched.

Did you see the new engine at all before it was fitted - if it had some slight damage (eg it was removed from a car that was smashed) then the mechanic may have had to use some parts off your old engine on the new one? (eg engine mounts and accessory items such as a/c pump etc)

If not......then it looks like you have an engine build in 2009.

If you had Tiguan with CTHD and your mechanic suppose to fit CTHD engine in. Then, if I were you, I’d go back to him to fit CTHD engine. If the DMF and clutch was needed? It’s just plain stupid not to replace them when the engine is out fo the car.
