It’s a tough choice. I don’t fanboy for any brands, but these two choices are both at the top end of normal mid-size suv’s, for meeting their intended purpose.

It’ll likely come down to your preference in style and the 1 or 2 things each brand do different for a given model.

I picked a CX5 over a Gen 1 Tiguan back in 2013 as it did the things *we* needed at the time better than the Tiguan did. Whether I'd still make the same decision over a Gen 2 Tiguan today would again come down to what the needs were at the time.

If I was buying it as my car and not the family car (which ain't happening lol) then I probably would go the Tiguan now because I'd go the full blown mod route.

The only pro with the CX5 is the exterior looks is more slicker, other than that it has too many cons (no panoroof is a show stopper, not very high tech & rear leg room is tight)

The Tiggy trumps in all other department

I have absolutely no desire to ever have a panoramic roof, couldn't think of anything I would want less.. so for me that is a massive tick.

But that's my point, every buyers list is different. I'm not fanboy enough perhaps.

Funny story. I asked the Mazda salesperson why Mazda don’t do panoroofs. His response was “it’s a safety issue because the large glass might compromise the integrity of the roof and might collapse on the occupants if the car flipped over”.

My response was “then why are you guys selling the Mazda MX5 (since it has a soft roof and offers no protection at all and worse than a glass roof)”......He didn’t reply [emoji846]

Check your budget and VW finance offer and you may be able to stretch to a 162 Highline (for the same repayments)... Plus a 5 year warranty on VW's until 31 December could be enough to swing it.

This is easy .... CX5 Turbo is way better than the 132TSI ... its a better drive and will have a better resale at the end. Servicing is a pain though as it is every 10000km (not the 15000 of the VW).

If, however, you pick the 162TSI it goes the other way around in my view. 162TSI better than the CX5 in almost all aspects (except resale). Like tigger said, negotiate a deal and use VW Finance and the price would be quite similar.

Though finally, the auto in the CX5 will be better in almost all situations than the DSG in any of the Tiguans.

Resale value is bad for all cars

But the problem with most car makers these days is that there's continual updates to the vehicles to keep them "new" in the showrooms. No sooner have you bought the "latest" model then a "newer and improved" version comes out which instantly makes your version drop down in terms of desireability.

It's this continual increase in options and features which pushes the resale price of the older cars down. It's not only a bit older car with a few more km on it but less features and less tech too.

I don't think this is specific to any particular brand. It's pretty much across the board these days as manufacturers continually update and "refresh" their models to compete.

Partially agreed; fact remains some brands definitely suffer more on the depreciation end then others.

This isn't a pot shot at the car itself, but ask a new Skoda buyer how they feel about resale.

For the record the numbers show a typical top of the range CX5 is still clocking in at 69% after three years; whereas the equivalent Tiguan is at 55%.

If this matters to you then it becomes an important part of the equation - on those 2015 vehicles that equates to over $5k. If you don't care then carry on.

I had a hard time deciding what to buy. Taken me well over 6 mths! Too many Jap cars with CVTs, European ones too expensive for my three drives per week.
Mazda CX5 is the only one with a regular auto, but I couldn't like the styling as much as I tried. Was going to wait for the new Rav4 but decided not to. Initially thought the 132 tsi would be sufficient but the front looked dreadful, then the update model arrived......by the time you ticked the options, you might as well get the 162. Which is what I did, with the works! Then next day decided that the sunroof wasn't a good idea with added weight, potential issues and can't completely block out the sun. Swapped to a Wolfsburg for a less attractive deal, but l think I've made the right choice, lol
Resale value is always bad if you are trading in. So no need to pamper your car too much as you will still get peanuts at the end of the day.
