Been out and about in the R Line 162 today. Covered almost 500km in a loop up to Ballarat and then on to the Pyrenees wine area and then back through Castlemaine to home. Covered a variety of roads and I must say that this is some car! Comfort, ride and handling have exceeded expectations. The DSG in this car is more refined than the version in the Mark 7 Golf GTI that I had previously. I mentioned in a previous post that tapping the shift lever into S mode give the car a real lift in performance and flexibility - it's more urgent and just gets up and goes. Fuel economy for the run showed 7.9l/100km.

However, my previous car was a Golf GTI Performance and I can say that the Tiguan 162 feels more lively from a standing start and merging on to freeways for example, especially if the DSG is in S mode. The German VW website shows the Tiguan 162 is faster than a Golf GTI in the 0 - 80 kmh acceleration comparison.

Thanks. I've driven the 140TDI and wasn't impressed. I realise the 165TSI is quicker (6.5 0-100 for the 162 instead of 7.9 for the 140) but I found the 140TDI not just sluggish, but overall a bit confused. I've been hanging out to see if the 162TSI is smoother and more decisive. If it feels more lively than your GTI, then I'm happy
Looks great! - You said Official VW Towbar - was this ordered through Gerald Slaven/Lennock and what was the cost? (Apologies if I've missed this somewhere else) and do you know if this was fitted locally in Canberra or perhaps somewhere else?

Yes it's an official tow bar according to the stamps all over it, plus it's the same part number as found on the Vw doco. It was ordered via Gerald slaven and installed by their master mechanic, it's the same bar I saw on a 132tsi at Lennock so would assume that it would be the same bar supplied by all the Aus dealers. I think roughly it was $1300-1500 installed with the wiring loom bar and labour, this was the same price from Lennock though was quoted $2100 by a Sydney dealer when I was ringing around.
The quote for an aftermarket one was $1600-1900 as I still would have needed to get the VW wiring loom though they were quoting me a H&R horizontal bar so this would have meant a big square cut of plastic from the rear bumper, I'm glad I took the gamble and go the official bar.

Man, you're getting me so gee'd up for this Have you driven a 140TDI? Just wondering if you can give an indication on the difference in performance.
I've driven both, had a 140tdi rline for a day driving and now own the 162tsi. The 140tdi once rolling was a very nice car, it had some punch and loved the torque. The 162 accelerates faster but really once they are both in boost both are nice and fast. Depending on your experience driving diesels both cars are responsive (I've been driving "sport" diesels for 8 years) though the petrols band is wider so more suited to the 'plant the foot and ride' style some people like.
The ride is the same. The noise is surprisingly the same in cabin, the diesels engine is surprisingly quiet and you don't hear it while in the cabin.
The only real issue we found with the 140 was the stop/start. Whenever this engaged and turned off the engine we found the lag between the engine starting backup and having enough compression to get the turbo spooling made my wife uncomfortable driving it, and I think would have cause me to kill someone in peak hour traffic. If we turned off the stop/start we found both cars to be fun to drive.

I am in 2 minds on your findings. I have driven only the 132TSI and the 140TDI.
Wifey and I found the 132TSI quite a bit quicker than the 140TDI for performance. We considered owning the 140TDI, and would have taken delivery of the car back in Dec 2016 if we went ahead, however, we decided to get the 162 Highline due to the sound of the TDI not being to the wife's taste. Too "truckish" for her.
Agree regarding the cabin, ride, and the engine is punchy. Fuel economy is excellent also.
And To be fair, its one of the smoothest diesel's I have been in, wifey is just spoilt!

They were similar to my experiences with the 140TDI.
VW Sutherland had exactly the vehicle we thought we wanted. 140TDI R-Line with DAP in white. In all seriousness, when I saw it I expected to drive it off the lot that day.
I've been driving the current model 3.0TDI Audi A6 Allroad for the last few years. Mated to the 7 speed DSG it's a very capable beast. It is my first experience with a diesel road car and I'm more than impressed with its refinement economy and performance.
Then I drove the Tiguan diesel. I was very surprised and disappointed.
I found it to be very truck like and not at all like the Audi diesels I'm used to. I hasten to add, I've also driven numerous 2.0TDI Audis as loan cars while the A6 was being serviced. So it's not a 4 cylinder verses 6 cylinder issue at all.
To confirm I wasn't imagining things, we then test drove a 132TSI. Like you, I also found the performance and refinement superior to the 140TDI.
I suspect this is what we can now expect from VAG diesels post diesel cheating fiasco. VW are so paranoid about it they have now detuned their diesels so much it's taken away all the character that made them superior to petrol engines. It appeared from my drive in the 140TDI the only way to wring any performance out of the engine was to rev the nuts out of it. There seemed to be no torquey down low performance that made diesels so practical in the past.
I'd love to see a torque graph. Rather than a practically flat torque graph I suspect it's more peaky. I have no doubt the quoted torque and power figures are correct, it's just that they're so far into the high part of the rev range they're not practical to use every day. In the lower part of the rev range, where diesels like to spend most of their time, the performance is tragic.
I've since ordered a 162TSI R-Line. Based on the impressions of those lucky sods that have taken delivery already, I made the right choice.
So, I don't think your wifey is spoilt at all. Rather she's a fine judge of machinery.
I took a 162TSI R-Line with DAP for a test drive today. Well, all I can say is that I'm very happy that I've ordered one. The wait has been so hard (and I still have 2-3 months to wait) but I found the 162 to be a lot more responsive than the 140 (and the 132).
I really enjoyed driving the car today, it is so classy, super smooth, and just a pleasure to drive. I didn't have a dealer with me so I was able to give the engine a workout as well. In normal mode it was nice and responsive, and in sport it was lots of fun. I planted my foot down on a nice stretch of road and let it pull. The DSG held the gear quite long and when it changed gear it sounded lovely, even gave a little crackle from the exhaust. I always find with new cars that the acceleration doesn't seem quite as brutal as ones that have been warn in a little. Also, with new cars like this being so smooth and quiet, you don't get the same raw feeling that you get with an older car. There was a bit of that feeling in this car but I'm definitely not disappointed with the performance.
I had previously driven a 140TDI R-Line without DAP. I had played around in the showroom on a comfortline that had DAP, so I had played with the AID and other features but hadn't been able to play with the ACC for example. I tested it out today and I love it! A little bit freaky at first but it stopped when it needed to, and getting it going again was as easy as pressing the resume button.
I drove it in Eco mode for a while as well, and actually found it really nice. It is so smooth and quiet, for a few moments it felt like I was in a hybrid (with almost no engine noise). I think this would be my go-to mode when I'm sitting on a freeway for a few hours.
One thing I wanted to ask others here: In my Jetta, I switch between normal and sports quite frequently by moving the gear stick down to S mode (rather than flicking across to tiptronic mode). Switching between normal and sports and vice versa in the Tiguan involves pressing the mode button and toggling through the options (or reaching forward to tap the desired option on the screen). How are you guys finding that? Using the paddles it probably an option for quick changes down for more acceleration but that doesn't change out of the mode you're in to sports mode as far as I'm aware.
All in all, I have absolutely no regrets with my decision to pre-order, and I just can't wait to finally get the car

If anyone in NSW is in the market for a white 162TSI with R-Line and DAP, I saw this - http://www.quicksales.com.au/ad/2016...emid-702809323. You'd want to negotiate a bit on price and I'm not sure exactly where in NSW the dealer is, but hey, if it saves waiting months and months it's at least worth a phone call
