2019 Tiguan 162 - Gearbox in Emergency Mode

Driving back today, I got the dreaded "Gearbox in emergency mode. You can drive on."


My 2019 VW Tiguan 162 has only done 25,000 km. I never owned a car where the auto transmission ever failed.

I could only drive home in 2nd Gear @ 40 km/h. It wouldn't let me change into any other gear (except R / N)


I took a photo of the Dash Error in case VW want evidence it happened. Car is still under warranty.

Post Covid, how long have people waited for VW to fix this issue at the dealership?

I waited 3 weeks but think I got lucky. My dealer was excellent in handling the issue and also a hire car to make sure I wasn't inconvenienced too much.

If I can get mine fixed within 3 weeks with a loan car provided that would be a good result.

I also booked in a Scheduled Service that includes 'Renew Haldex oil'.

Does the issue with the Gearbox / Mechatronic have anything to do with needing to renew the 'Haldex Oil'?

I don't believe this is related to the oil / service but don't quote me on that. I'm in Campbelltown area and went through my local dealer. If your services are up to date and you have the vw roadside service, everything will be ok and hopefully fairly stress free for you

I think the renew haldex oil is a standard but from reading it’s the filter that they don’t clean that causes most of the issues with the haldex I think, that’s the hit that gets gunked up and can cause a failure

No.

The Haldex is separate to the DSG gearbox

The Mechatronics is part of the DSG.

For info the Haldex is part of the rear differential, that transfers the amount of torque to the rear wheels as an when required.

Got a call today from the Dealership 'booking team'.

She ran through confirmation of the online booking, then after I mentioned that Gearbox in Emergency Mode she stated that they charge $220 to run a diagnostics.

I asked what she meant as the car is under warranty then she stated if its under warranty that I didn't need to pay but that she needed to inform me anyway.

She then proceeded to update the online booking notes to include the "$220 Diagnostics Fee"

I assume the dealership sales of VW must be declining.

I assume the dealership sales of VW must be declining.

In fact in the last two months VW sales in Australia have now brought them back into the top10 brand sales in Australia now they have started to overcome their semi conductor supply issues.

Went in for service.

They 'confirmed' there is an issue with the DSG Mechatronic & will replace under warranty.
Approx. 4-6 weeks for the part to come from Germany. Good its covered under warranty, disappointed gearbox fails after 25K kms.

They said I can still drive the Tiguan until the part comes in from Germany (4-6 weeks).
Does this sound right?? I thought from other posts it would not be safe to drive once confirmed DSG / Mechatronic is faulty??

When it goes into fail mode no reverse. So I wouldn’t park anywhere you wouldn’t be able to drive out of. Also annoying the lack of gears and how it bunny hops around going from 2-4.
Also tbh I didn’t drive mine cos I just didn’t wanna be caught in traffic or needing to drive properly and have it mucking around

I’ve mentioned this before but does anyone know much about Class Actions and legal options? There seem to be so many owners with a failed mechatronic unit. More a matter of when not if and surely going to have a really nasty effect on re-sale value.

Once this part has been replaced, how long is it good for? I have little faith in the durability of this design. Amazing car to drive when brand new but jeez it’s going to cost you later.
