  • Thanks INASNT.

I agree area below the curve is what makes a car fast. Not the numbers.

I will drive the apr for a while and decide. I really don’t like the compressor surge sound. It really detracts from the overall feel of the car.

Etuners here (South Africa) seem to have great success with tunes.

I will be using their TCU tune for my box.

We are talking about an awd family suv making less than 200kw.

If you were tuning a rear wheel drive higher powered turbo charged car like a bmw m4 for example there may be more variation in the approach between tuners with decisions made about whether the tune needs to be moderated at lower rpm so you arent just smoking the rear wheels but this is not an issue on stock hardware on a tig.
I'll agree to disagree. Just drive a couple of different tuned cars back to back and you'll notice the difference between tuning styles. I changed tuners on my first tig (Veizu -> APR) and there was a noticeable difference in how the tunes behaved. The APR had a measurable tail-off at higher rpm and also came on harder. Both ran 0-100 in similar times.

My TCU is also tuned by etuners, makes a difference on hard acceleration.

You should go full Motec ECU swap then you can modify everything to your liking.

        • APR tunes literally max out the turbo's compressor hence the surge part throttle and the hard boost coming on.

One can imagine the duty cycle table for the wastegate actuator something 100% all the way.

I guess they tune so the cars have fat torque and put smiles on people's faces, however in a racing environment you want torque to be linear not look like a mountain.

You can gradually ramp the DC on the wastegate to keep torque flat, although most people after these OTS tunes want instant smiles, instant smiles means higher word of mouth advertising.

FWIW, I reckon the EGTs would be sky high with APR tunes vs REVO as it ramps onto boost due to turbo's turbine side.

          • I have found (having owned a number of APR tuned cars - still have 1 currently) that you can generally "fix" some of the tapering off effect by ensuring you have good airflow in and out of the engine .... a good intake and a good DP really keeps the APR tune going for longer, making good power all the way into the redline.

I always liked the aggressive early boost (though it always induces wheelspin in lower gears ). Imagine the looks I get in my Amarok when rolling in 3rd and having a moment of slight sideways action and wheelspin .... its normally very unexpected lol

That said I do like the OEM+ tune on my TSI Golf, its much smoother lower in the range with real kick at the top end. A good intake probably helps there too.

On my R I'm likely to go OEM+ for the tune too, though other bits will be sourced from all over.

            • Here’s some dyno charts for Revo stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3 (IS3:

The Revo tune generally doesn’t come on as hard and will pull better to redline, though stock IS20 will always struggle a bit.

These numbers were from an Octavia vRS 162TSI motor so yes FWD. Most of the data for this motor seems to be done on FWD models.

So I added some ethanol to my fuel fill up last night. And it is definitely smoother. Slightly less compressor surge. But still apparent. Will give it s few days to settle and go from there. Can’t log yet as I don’t have the right obd scanner and software. See APR do. Dongle for bout $200. [emoji15]

Thinking of trying Etuners if this flash doesn’t settle.

Some people like that noise. Do they do it on purpose as part of the tune?

When are you hearing the surge? If after coming off throttle you could try upgrading your diverter valve. Maybe get a gfb dv+

That noise could be light engine knock, ramping in boost too hard, real early can cause that with too much timing and a small turbine rear housing.

Add in a bit of ethanol will combat knock however will lean out mixtures a bit, but with newer cars the short term/long term fuel trims should pull back the AFRs enough.

A DV or BOV won't do much if you've got a fat load of duty cycle commanded on the turbo wastegate - unless you can bleed it coming onto boost.

                            • It is WOT surge. Not compressor stall after throttle lift. Don’t think it’s knock. If it is. It’s motor breaking knock. But timing is not being pulled. But the resolution of my elm obd and mobile isn’t the best.

So need to find a better obd reader preferably via pc.
                              Aka burger tuning jb4 logging.

Got any ideas. I have an obd II usb cable from my Evo that could work. But don’t have any logging software.

Yes you really need a high speed OBD reader. Something like a new VCDS cable should be able to do it.
