Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Happy to hear you’re enjoying your tune. Try a launch (launch control) and you’ll get really excited....

Stage 2 will give you a bit more torque and increase the area under the curve. Should be sub 5s 0-100 with stage 2, based on stage 1 getting around 5 flat.

Dr. Mod has diagnosed you with a case of the mod bug!! Only one way to cure it....

I get the impression that all an ECU chip update does is increase the turbo boost

Boost, fuelling, ignition timing, throttle position maps, etc.

It’s not quite as simple as just requesting more boost. There’s literally hundreds of tables within the ECU and each one can be modified.

        • Sorry for the noob question. What does APR stage 1 involve? Just the ECU tune with no hardware mods?

                I agree

What I meant was, every time VW release an improved kw engine (2018 Golf GTI 169kW -> 2019 Golf GTI 180kW) all they are doing is modding the ECU

I expect the Tiguan ECU can be modded all the way to the equivalent of the 2019 Golf R (213kW/380Nm)

I suspect VW have this kW contingency as marketing fodder for annual vehicle improvements with no change required to engine, tooling or engineering

Actually, no,the GTI engines from 162kw (which is the Tiguan engine) to to 169kw to 180kw are all the same mechanically but the Golf R engine is not. It has different components, most notable a bigger turbo as standard. Aftermarket tunes can certainly get you to Golf R power levels and beyond, but I think this type of power exceeds what VW is prepared to live with for the components the GTI engines. They do have to provide a warranty for the engine, whereas the aftermarket tuners do not (unless you pay a lot extra).

Its not, its actually a detuned Golf R engine.

                            Interesting in feedback. Seem reputable.

"This is an extremely powerful and quality tune bringing final figures to over 200 kW!"

Website says you first send a copy of your current ECU and then they send you a tweaked ECU back within 3 days

                              1) Can you flash back to original prior to servicing ?

                              2) Can you flash multiple times ?

                              Comment

                              • Generally the Superchips tunes are fairly conservative tunes and don't push the envelope too much.

They're reasonably well priced but I would expect them to perform just a little bit above a JB4.

It's a budget tune and you generally get what you pay for.

Yes I think you can flash back to stock. As long as it's the same car you can flash multiple times. Which is one benefit. There are a number of other tuners out there that can supply similar hand-held controllers which allow similar functionality in terms of loading files.

No guarantees that it won't be detected even when you flash back to "stock". With some of these handheld devices your flash counter increments so it's a bit of a give-away that it has had the ECU written.

Personally if you're going to get a tune I would be getting one based on best performance, convenience, ease/cost of updates and support.
