  • Unknown loose metal ring under engine cover

    Hi Guys,

I have recently begun hearing rattles from the engine bay from my 4 month old MK7 Golf R.
It only really happens when the DSG is in sport mode around 1.5-3k revs.
My thoughts are that its the soundaktor as it seems a common issue. So I have a really quick poke around the engine bay to see if anything stands out that might be loose ect..
After taking the engine cover off I find this round disk just sitting loose under the coils on the intake manifold.

It looks like it once lived somewhere with a purpose. Does anyone know what it might be? Its was just sitting in this location (where the cable tie is)

Not sure if its the reason for the noise. I doubt it but the fact that it's not in its home is another concern.

    Would appreciate your help.

      Great. Thanks!
Not sure how it would have come loose and ended up there. I've never been in behind here or had to remove them.
Cant imagine is much of an issue that is missing? Ill try and get it back on tomorrow. Do you have an example of how they work?

Thanks for the quick response mate.

It pushes over a stud, to hold the sheet of insluation to the bodywork.

Probably a cousin to the piece of packing tape and buckle that was floating inside the rear of my Polo's bonnet. Used to shoot across and rattle going around corners LOL

That'd be off the transit covers fitted to the cars for shipping.

The source of your rattle is likely to be the flex pipe in your exhaust dump pipe - many other Mk7 R and GTI owners have reported the same metallic noise at similar RPM to what you describe.

Interesting. I have not read about that one yet. I have leaned towards the soundaktor because it only happens when I'm in race mode. All other modes are nice and quiet respectively

Soundaktor is easy to disconnect so you can test that theory.
