Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I always do an intermediate oil change @ 7500km.

Hey mate ... general consensus is the new batch of synthetics possess great protective reserves beyond even the 15k service intervals, especially if you drive decent distances as it looks like you do. If you'd lived a couple of k's from work and still drive, however, might be worth learning to change it yourself if you count yourself as an "enthusiast" like the rest of us. It's cheap insurance and educational at the same time. Woo hoo.

          • my main concern is the "metal shards" from breaking in the engine

and the reason why I want a VW specialist to change the oil is so that they can stamp it in the log book.

Is that the glazing of the cylinder linings ? Or the piston blow by, leading to fuel contaminating your oil ? Or clogging of the inlet manifold and top of the valve heads from the direct injection predominating over port injection at constant low revs ?

Mechanics talk about that stuff all the time, but no one's ever seen evidence for option 1, rarely for option 2 but frequently for option 3 in the early years of direction injection, where early adopters didn't employ opposing port fuel injection to wash out the manifold. But as you know, the EA-888 uses both fuel injection methods.

              • MY19?

Anyone got any news to share regarding changes we're likely to see for MY19 spec Golf 7.5?

Personally, I think DAB+ radio would be very welcome, and maybe a HUD...

(My wife says that if they make Tornado Red available for non-GTI/R models, we'd be signing on the dotted line in a heartbeat!)

                Anyone? Anyone?

                A.

Like you, I was VERY keen when the 135TDI Alltrack was introduced, but we settled on a 140TDI Tiguan instead. The planned Golf will be the city car for us, with the Tig for hauling my golf clubs and her musical instruments!

                    • Hey guys,

Just a quick question on the stock exhaust...

Does it give out the DSG farts, burbles or pops in any particular drive mode?

Or do you need something like a res delete/mod of the exhaust to get these sounds?

Don’t think that’s an MY19 if it’s already in your driveway. But good try.

On my stock 2018 golf gti 7.5 the DSG farts and burbles and pops are louder in sports mode or when you are giving it a good go in manual mode. The sounds are definitely louder and more noticeable on the outside then it is on the inside.
I have plans to make farts and pops louder in the future via some sort of exhaust mod (not sure which route to go yet) or maybe even some sort of tune like a apr stage 2 to make the pops and crackles heaps louder. But only after my warranty runs out in 3 years.

You'll get them in the GTI and R without a res delete, but apparently only after switching from Normal to Race after start-up or to Individual with Race sound. 'Word has it the ECU resets the 2nd exhaust valves after shutdown regardless of the mode. And yes, a res delete will release a little more sound, but nothing like a proper sports muffler swap.
