Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Speaking of beading.. I finally got around to running a test patch of Nanolex textile/leather sealant on the weekend:

What these fairly pointless pics are showing is the beading of water in 1; in 2 I ran my finger 'over' the droplets to push them and they started to run down the seat rather than soak in; and in 3 I flicked the same sort of droplet over untreated textile and it began soaking in as per the circled darker patch.

In summary the product repels liquid quite well and I will finish off the car when I have time. It is a simple spray and leave proposition, although it has quite an odour (so best to leave the car open if possible) initially and supposedly is fairly toxic if breathed in so avoid that to. Otherwise for the price its a winner. Oh and no residue or change in material feel once dry.

I purchased the following items of flea bay - will upload some pic's when I get a chance:

          1. Carbon Style door sill protectors VW Golf MK7 (5door) | eBay

Easy to fit - just had to make sure the sills were clean and dry. Rear sills were more difficult given the shape of the sill but using a hair dryer helped. Overall, couple of wrinkles barely noticeable and protecting my sills nicely.

          2. Splash Guards MUD Flaps FOR VW Volkswagen Golf 7 MK7 2013 2014 UP VW120 | eBay

Fitted perfectly - moulded well. My only comment is the screws provided are too small for the pre-existing holes in the VW wheel wells. Fortunately the pre-existing holes had there own screws easily removed with an allen key and then re-used to hold the mudflap. Otherwise - very happy with result.

VW GOLF 7 MK7 2013 2014 Chrome Exhaust Muffler Tip Pipe | eBay

Item as described, no obvious blemishes. Fitting was easy and they look great!

Are the mud flaps flexible enough to survive scrapes against bad drive ways?

Will let you know, however I suspect they are not as flexible as the OEM version

Is this a good price? What are people’s thoughts on opti-coat? Is it worth it?
Being time-poor I wanted protection that I didn't have to worry about. After my extensive reading, I went for Opticoat at Elite Finish. Cost me around $490 from memory to Opticoat all the exterior surfaces (including windows and wheels). Over the past 4 months I've pressure washed the car about once a week to fortnight to wash off bird poo etc. The car beads like I properly wash and wax regularly (I've probably only washed it 2, maybe 3 times so far? Even then they haven't been the 2 bucket method either). Obviously a proper wash will ensure there are absolutely no contaminants etc that may remain on the surface but it means you can go longer between proper washes if you wish. Brake dust is so bloody stubborn and after a while needs a proper wipe and clean. In this video you'll see the second wheel has been wiped with my finger at the 3 O'clock position. This demonstrates a simple spray down does not take off all the brake dust but certainly takes off a fair amount.

Overall I'm really happy with it. This photo is of my car 2 weeks ago:

There is a guy, David Fermani, in the US who half-Opticoated his car and washed with dish washing soap weekly, touchless washes monthly. David's posts are on pages 1, 2, 4, 7 and 12. His 6 month update on page 2 is probably the best indicator of how well Opticoat works.

BTW Dutch77, that Nanolex interior sealant looks awesome! I told myself I would stop buying stuff for the car.....

Lol, I would accept that offer but I don't even have time to give my interior a proper clean atm prior to a spray down. Btw does your car have LEDs for the vanity lights? I have a few spare if you wanted to help yourself to them.

                      Cheers Alex

Haha I know how that is, I haven't got around to spraying the rest of the interior yet - the weekend cruise took priority.

I will need to reread your thread and do something about mine though in case I end up on the freeway again at night. As for interior lighting I have no idea what I've got, it's quite a bright white light? With my skills I shouldn't be allowed near anything electrical.

If your vanity mirror light looks white then it is possibly an LED as the standard bulbs are yellow. See how you go.

That one was definitely yellow - although it's probably the first and last time I open it.

Fair enough, I use it when I need more interior lighting since the dedicated front central map LEDs are quite directional (which is good when you're driving and the passenger flips theirs on). Its a cinch to install mate, I'm electromechanically retarded so if I can do it, you can.
