Hi

I have a query for the more obsessive of you

am getting my new Golf R manual (black) in a couple of weeks and I (like most people) don't like the standard wheels so want to change

like
Rays but too much of a hassle to get in Sydney so have decided on OZ Leggera HLTs

will run the tires that come on the car initially

so the question for the obsessives is............................

the standard wheels (still ugly) are 19 x 8 with 235/35 R19s

do I buy an 19" x 8" or a 19 x 8.5" and how do I make sure I order the right offset

and what are the advantages / disadvantages of the slight width difference - or will it be impossible to tell??

is you like/want rays wheels call Mikey at TyrePoint hawthorn, melbourne. He can get any rays at a very good price.

As for the width of the OZ Leggeras, they come in 19x8 +45 and 19x8.5 +47.

Difference in "poke" with 19x8 +45 is 6mm compared to standard wheels
And with 19x8.5 +47 is 10.5mm "poke" compared to standard wheels.

Difference in "poke" between the OZ wheels is around 4mm.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong

I support Avdo's recommendation of RAYS wheels, particularly if you choose a lightweight forged set. Micky and Sam are keen for your business and shipping of wheels from Melbourne to Sydney should be less than $100. Dutch77 is not impressed with Japanese wheels fitted to a German car, though it's OK to fit Italian OZ Racing wheels. I hope it has nothing to do with Italy being on the same side as Germany during WWII.

Avdo's maths may be 1mm high, given the OEM Cadiz wheel has an offset of +50. By my calculations, the above figures should be 5mm and 9.5mm, respectively. The equivalent data for RAYS wheels will depend on which model you choose. As a general rule of thumb, if you stick with 8" you will have no poke beyond the guards using stock suspension. If you go with 8.5", which 9 out of 10 people do, you should be OK at the rear, but have a little bit of poke up front, which from all reports is hardly noticeable and produces no rubbing with the stock suspension set-up. I'm conservative and am sticking with the stock width of 8". I have other reasons as well.

Mikey is pretty much bang on. 8" allows more wiggle room than 8.5" and x8 et45 is a fairly safe fitment - the one to go for if you want to stay on the conservative side. If you are lowered, the natural camber (due to lowering on independent suspension) should help you a little bit. 8" is still a reasonably wide wheel

But Mikey/Avdo are right, try their contact and you may be surprised at what sort of deal you can get on the Rays.

As for the rest of this commentary, how did you guys know I am a WW2 buff? Best I keep my thoughts on that private.

Timely that we review the Ultraleggeras again (although I think people are forgetting the new Leggeras as an alternative), these are finished in OZ race gold but the owner added a clear coat to give it added gloss.

Are these a new type of centre cap? I feel they really suit the colour of the wheel and the aggressive nature of the mk7r design.

Not sure how new they are, but they are definitely genuine OZ - silver carbon with red lettering. Assume these could be organised by special order, would probably work well on a white or silver R. I've got the more traditional black carbon with silver text on my Leggeras, and had the same on my ST LMs.

Another look at an old BBS classic, the RX-R, in three finishes - satin gold, brilliant silver and satin black diamond cut.

These alloys were on my list when choosing,I really do like the look of the diamond cut finish in these alloys and I think they also would have suited my R,they IMO give the impression they are larger than 19" though I wanted to move away from the worry of curbing a diamond cut wheel.

The white GTI with the diamond cut works, but curbing them would bring many tears me thinks.

I still think the Borbets have worked well on your R though.

These were only identified as 18 inch GT wheels, whatever they are they have a turbine look (although every alternate blade is angled the opposite way so not quite) and almost a little OEM to them.
