I posted this in the "just picked up my MKVII Golf" but being the proud parent I am, I'm posting it here too! I'm only 22km in so far but absolutely loving it!
MY16 GTI Manual
Nice man. Silver's different (in my area anyway). Flaunt it.
First post, brand new Golf owner. Ordered, in November, my Carbon Steel Golf GTI MY16 with DSG, DAP and Sunroof. Picked it up a week early (last week). Great little car, really fun to drive. Lovely salespeople.
Unfortunately, the car went back to the dealership this morning. I got the dreaded "Error: gearbox. reverse gear is unavailable." along with some angry error alerts, some accompanying amber lights on the dash, and the inability to leave 1st gear. The service department gave me a courtesy car and will give me a hire car in the meantime. There is a good chance the car will be sent back to VW Australia, and I'll be without my GTI for a while. I'm still deciding whether I should demand (according to consumer law) a refund or replacement, given the replacement will take just as long to receive.
I assume this is just one of those things, and not something 99% of the GTI drivers experience. Any similar experiences out there?

Well that sucks. Hasn't happened to me, and personally I'd be trying for a replacement. Depends how determined you are as it could be a bit of work.

That's just bad luck. Let's hope it gets sorted ASAP.
Not sure how this one will go, but if you think you've got a lemon, then go the replacement - they could repair your current vehicle, but then what if the same thing happens weeks or months down the track? Might be better off starting from scratch...
Yes it is I was worried about it looking a bit OTT but a quick test fit (ie. holding it in place with paint cans lol) seems to look pretty nice to me. Agressive without looking too ricer.
I bought special primer paint and good quality spray paint to get it gloss black, but test sprays on HDPE I have laying around showed that nothing sticks to this stuff. I could scratch off the primer, 3 coats of black and 2 coats of clear with my fingernails If you scuff the surface with very fine grit sandpaper the cuts absorb the paint and actually get bigger. It's tough plastic, but definitely not intended to be painted!
I also have some gloss black vinyl wrap, but not enough to cover it myself. A shop I called about wrapping it said they couldn't do it because they need to heat the surface for the wrap to stay put while they work it, and that's a no-no with HDPE as well (melts at 125 degrees C). I could order a large sheet and try myself without heat, but that'll take too long and will result in heaps of wasted wrap.
Final idea is to plasti-dip it. I'm too impatient to wait for an eBay delivery over xmas, so I'll be spending $30 on a can of black, and $30 on a can of glossifier on my way home from work this afternoon.
If all that fails then it'll go on in it's current state, but that means I'll need to 'un-gloss' my rear valance. The whole car needs to be the same the whole way 'round as far as I am concerned!
Edit: I could also just try the glossifier on its own seen as the splitter is black already...
Done! I gave up on glossing it (long story). I tried installing without removing the bumper but it became apparent very quickly it would be faster and easier, so that's what I did. All told it took about an hour to get on. Pretty happy with it
