  • Just thought I'd share what may very well be a temporary solution to the holes left in my front bumper after I removed my Euro plate holder.

    Basically this is the before:

    And this is the after:

    From a distance:

    I used the following:

I did actually undercoat, paint, sand, and seal a whole bunch of the caps in an attempt to colour match the caps better but as you can see in the photo below, the painted cap was worse (it's the top one just in case lol):

What I might try is to get some colour matched touch-up paint from Autobarn and paint a few caps to see if it's any closer. These were a temporary solution in lieu of the US Bumper Plugs, but I doubt I'll ever be wiling to spend $100 on those bumper plugs because mine are smaller and less noticeable than the 'proper' plugs, which is kind of the whole point. If I can perfect these then I'll be happy. Might even get a mate to machine some smaller copies of the US ones. Time will tell how the tape holds up.

Next step, making my own plate holders for the Kingpin covers to fit on!

    Cheers,

    - Matt

    • Mk7 gti loud tickcing/knocking noise on acceleration

So I've had my gti almost 12 months now, has just under 13,000km on it... I've noticed in the last 2-3 months a loud ticking/knocking/tapping noise from the engine bay under acceleration, doesn't happen all the time though and it's hard to replicate but usually happens at about 2-3000 rpm under moderate acceleration (say pulling onto a freeway on ramp) the best thing I can liken it to is a the loud ticking noise cv's make when they've crapped themselves, has anyone else heard this in their car? And ideas? ive checked the cv's and they're all intact and fine, I'm at a bit of a loss

      Cheers!

A friend has an Audi A3 with the 1.8 motor in it and is having an issue that sounds VERY similar. Could be a shared component. From memory it's to do with something coming loose in the turbo area after the car has a few km's on the clock. Apparently the issue is known and acknowledged by VAG but there is no fix. He's off work at the moment but if he comes back to work this week I'll try and get the details for you. Hopefully unrelated, but worth a look anyway!

          Is it like this?

I have had this happen 2 or 3 times including this occasion I filmed it to show vw. It happens for no reason and stops for no reason. With no way of replicating it in the vehicle for them to locate it, the dealer couldn't really do anything.

          • Nah not like the noise in that video ^^ very loud, separatly distinguishable ticks/knocks... Really does sound like the noise cv joints make when they're flogged out... Hasn't done it for about a week now, hopefully whatever it was has rectified itself... or fallen off the car hahahaha

            • Well done mate, I've been looking into this recently.
Can I ask where you bought the plugs from? Bunnings?
I've been looking around but haven't found anything yet and agree about the bumperplugs.com price.

              Cheers

Yeah got my caps from bunnings in the DIY kitchen section. You can get bigger ones from eBay for about the same price, if not less. Mine seem to be staying on well so far though so I'll stick (no pun intended) with them until I bother sorting out something else. If I bother.

                • They look good! If I hadn't gone with a Lakin bracket I would have done this - at the time I hadn't seen one done

                  • Hey guys. I took the bumper off my car today for another DIY project and thought some of you may be curious to see what the car looks like "bra-less". Gotta say it looks pretty beastly without the bumper so now my mind is working out how to achieve the look, but with the bumper on obviously.

                    • Picked up my MY16 GTI on monday. Did a bit of detailing last night. Full wash, mechanical decontamination and paint cleanse plus Full Metal Jacket paint protection. Sorry for the quality of the photos, took them with camera phone. I'll get the windows tinted tomorrow morning.

He has the Bi Xenon headlights, and those come with the stripe through the headlights. Visual differences between the standard GTI and the Performance is the red GTI badging, the Santiago wheels, the LED tails, the GTI labelled brake callipers, and the larger brake disks.

When I first started looking at GTIs everyone was banging on about the bi xenons. I can safely say I am a convert. They're amazing and worth every penny

mattaus is correct. It's a standard MY16 GTI with sunroof option. Love the bi-xenon headlights. What are you getting GoGTI?

Haven't got the windows tinted yet. Went to Happy tint this morning but they couldn't do the small windows at the front. I know ppl have asked in other threads here but the answers all seem to be interstate so if anyone knows who in Melbourne would tint the front small windows as well, please let me know so i can contact them.

                            Thanks.

                              I'm getting a GTI PP.
I'm getting tinting done with the dealership, not sure if they are going to tint the small windows in the front. I asked them to but we'll see.
