But didn't VW promises a significant improvement in the Mk7? I would've expected most of you guys to get < 7, but maybe it'll just start off higher while the car is new, the weather is hot, and your foot is heavy???

Wait till you've got over 10k Kms before complaining about fuel economy. Engine will be tight for some time.

You don't buy a GTI and expect diesel fuel economy.

IMO i'm a touch dissapointed with the economy in my GTI. I've only got 3,000 on the clock though so its probably too early to tell. I don't think i've ever seen below 7.2 regardless of the trip (and that includes a 1400km state to state highway trip)

I saw low 7s all day long in my Mk5, often into 6's in my commute. I get 4.5 regularly on my 90tsi work hack

The GTI (with DSG) has a fuel consumption rate of 8.3 l/100km (urban), 5.5 l/100km (extra-urban) and 6.6 l/100km (combined), so 7.2 l/100km isn't that bad for an engine that has yet to bed-in completely.

Models fitted with the DSG transmission will also consume more fuel, as the DQ250 is of a wet-clutch design. The DQ200 fitted on the 103TSI and 90TSI uses a dry-clutch design, which is more efficient.

Also, a 2.0 litre petrol turbo engine will always consume more fuel than a 1.4 litre petrol turbo engine.
