  • Different grades have slightly different viscosities and are for different applications (like racing). 5W-30 is appropriate for road use GTIs with normal service intervals

I think the Shell stuff you have will be fine. I have a Castrol bottle in case that's the same spec. Thankfully it hasn't been used yet

    • thanks Jimi, I ended up getting another car to take out tonight. I think I'll call the local service centre in the morning and see what they say as well. I'm assuming this oil is fine but I want to make sure there are no issues with the car being under warranty

      • Hey all,

I'm considering lowering my GTI PP (well, soon to be mine). Just need to decide if I want to wear the cost of replacing the shocks early if the springs cause any issues.

I'm looking at these Eibach Pro Kit springs. The brand is fine, but I'm not seeing too many discussions specifically pertaining to their use on Mk7 Golf's. Anyway, according to the blurb on the page they should lower myGTI PP 20-25mm which is more-or-less what I'm after. Does anyone have any experience with these?

        • I've had my Golf 7 GTI for almost 2 years ... Not a drop of oil used in that time.

Here's some info on springs: http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=100863

          • Am taking my MK7 GTI to the dealer tomorrow morning for the free 5K checkover/runthrough they offer where I can apparently bring up any issues I've had with the car.

To be honest I've had nothing to complain about once I got the auto-hold/e-brake firmware upgrade installed.

The only thing I'm going to bring up with them is the Front Assist with City Emergency Brake (City EB) function which works very unpredictably at the moment - ie. I get zero notification no matter how close I get to cars in front yet sometimes have the little red warning car flash up on the dash when a car is passing me normally.

Anyway, thought I'd ask if anybody can suggest stuff I should get them to check while they have it

            thanks,

            • ^ If you haven't done so already, see if they can thrown in the Nav map upgrade.

On that, are most people being charged for Nav map updates? I've had one dealer which does them for free, whilst another charges ~$60 for it.

I did mine myself some time ago

Pointed out the unpredictable operation of the car's radar but not sure if they checked anything (the service manager nodded as I explained it's behaviour but I got feeling he wasn't going to follow up )

More interesting was after the inspection he expressed surprised that I've never needed to top up the oil because they hadn't needed to either. He says the GTI's normally use around a litre per 2000 kms. So I must be driving mine very tamely

                  • After 2 years of ownership: My Golf 7 GTI still has a rough warm-up phase where the engine vibrates through the chassis. Feels like the motor is dropping a cylinder until properly warm. It's had no effect on oil consumption and no issues so far with reliability. I'll ask my local dealer to document my observations as was the case 1 year ago at 1 year service ... just in case.

                      • Options for different seats in MY15 GTI

Hi All, I have MY 15 Golf GTI, and the seats do not suit my body at all - I need to be able to give more adjustment to the seat pan angle - all the GTI has is the one lever which does the height and adjusts the seat pan slightly.

I've currently been making do sitting on a cushion, however this is not good enough long term for me, and I'm thinking about selling the car just for this reason.

I contacted VW HQ a few months ago, and they didn't really have any options for me, saying I can replace the seat myself and it won't void my warranty for things unrelated to the seat.

Do the optional leather seats you can get for the Golf GTI/R come with electronic adjustments (in particular seat pan angle)? If so, would it be possible to buy these and replace the existing standard seats in a Golf GTI?

                        • Can't answer re: R seats, but what is often done in these cases is to add steel spacers to the (usually forward) bolts.

Take a look at this: Seat base angle modification - Kia Forum

                          Comment

                          • If you need greater rearward angle of the seat base, can you not just put some washers under the front mounting bolts to raise the front angle of the seat a tad backwards?

Or vice-versa if you require a more forward tilt of the seat base (ie. washers on the rear mounting points)

                              But.....

If you paid the MY15 run out price ($49, 990 drive away) you likely got a better deal than you would get if you went in to buy a MY16 model now.

Based on the new pricing (and also based on SA government charges):

                              Car: $46, 490
                              Stamp Duty: $1800
                              12 Months Rego: $690
Registration Plate: $44 (including new registration fee)
Dealer Delivery: $2490 (some dealers charge more and some less)

                              Total: $51, 514

So an MY16 is slightly more expensive than an MY15 at the run out price. Not a lot more i'll grant you, but you do start negotiations at a higher price.

I signed my contract for a GTI PP based on the run out price and I am happy. Got Driver Assist, Sunroof, Extended Warranty and Premium Plates for just over $53K and I am getting an MY16 model. IMO you would probably be hard pressed to walk in to a dealer at the moment looking to buy a MY16 and do a deal that good.
Ive paid $48,300 for my MY16 GTi-PP (with pearlescent, paint treatment, Gti mats and tinting), which I reasonably happy with, though the waiting (ETA on delivery is 21 October) is killing me!
