  • We love the sunroof on our standard Mk7 GTI.

Would never own a car without one now.

      Wow

My point was that it's a hot hatch, it's designed to cover multiple bases - I still consider a sportscar more in the guise of a Porsche 911.

Even then I'd take the 911 in PDK.

      • I agree Dutch, each to their own. The 911 GT3, which some say is the purest sports car of all, is now only available with PDK - they've just dropped the manual entirely.

I have them as i love to drive around with the windows down and not get blown out of the car. They do add a bit of wind noise. If i had a roof i wouldn't bother with them though.

My previous Mk5 GTI had a sunroof and it was pretty useless due to the size. The Mk7 one is worth the money i think due to the fact that its about 3 times the size!

I'd be inclined to say that anything with more than 2 doors isnt a sports car. IMO a sports car doesn't have to be fast, it just has to have a "sports car" seating position and 2 doors. i.e. a Golf GTI destroys a Toyota 86 in most aspects, but imo the 86 is a sports car and the GTI is a hot hatch.

And to some it would not be a sports car at all.

Although I am a little surprised they chose not to engineer that car with a manual option.

Sunroof: I never bothered to look as I wasn't going to fork out for it, but I assume the Mk7 still has a plastic blind in addition to the shade blind? I know the Tiguan didn't and that ruled it out right away for me (when we were shopping another car).

Sports car: again hitting the nail on the head.. a true sports car is one that was designed that way to begin with, not a go-fast version of an existing sedan/hatch.

Ultimately everyone can have their own opinion on what constitutes a sports car, as they can choose what gearbox suits. Seems logical, and saves a constant sore head.

I have no experience with the VW sunroof, but we've owned an Accord Euro with a factory sunroof for 7 years.

Initially I thought it nice to have, but found that I almost always draw the blind on it due to uncomfortable heat transfer onto my balding noggin in warm weather. In Winter it's nice to let a more light into the interior, but to be honest I wouldn't bother paying extra for one in future.

In the longer term they can also cause issues with sealing/wind noise.

But to each their own, you may love it.

              • Personally went without the sunroof, Australian sun just doesn't really allow for it and having steel versus glass above my head, well, I know which I would rather in the event of an accident/tree falling on the car during a storm - happened to the Commodore during the 2011 storms.

                • Thanks for the sunroof comments people. Looks like this design is too good to resist. I'm going to try & squeeze it in if possible.

Just saw a review of a Malaysian GTI, & it had auto-folding rear vision mirrors. They've never been included on ours have they?

                  • No we don't get the folding mirrors, but you can get them installed later after market. There's a couple guys who've done it & put up a thread with instructions. I wish we did have them as an option here.

                    • Got a (noob) question on Corporate Plus discounts - if the dealer says they don't care whether you pay by Novated Lease or not to grant the discount, but your employer requires you to pay by Novated Lease to get the discount, could it come back to bite me if I applied for it anyway & returned the form to the dealer to get a discount (but not by paying via Novated Lease)?

                      • The wording of the vw policy IIRC is that the car forms part of your salary package. The letter should satisfy the audit but if it doesn't and they come back later looking for more information, the dealer is a bit screwed. What they do from there... well who knows.

I absolutely LOVE my sunroof and after driver assist its the next best option. The opening however isn't as big as you might think by looking at it from the outside. The only issue I've had is rubber creaking which VW lubricated and of course no low profile roof racks.

                          • Does the rear fog light indicator on the light control switch lit up when the rear fog light is switched on? Mine front fog light indicator lit up (as in changed to green colour) but not the rear one. Indicator on the dash also lit up for both.

                            • Anyone purchased with an ABN? Are savings comparable or better than Corporate plus?

I think if anything, they're meant to be better?

There is really only corporate pricing and/or whatever else you negotiate.

Given it takes a couple of minutes to acquire an ABN my experience in the past is that any 'discount' for 'ABN buyers' is just a feel good factor.

(That isn't to say if you had an ABN and were a regular purchaser you wouldn't score a great deal)
