Hi everyone,

I managed to find a fully specced GTI, which has xenons, acc, sunroof, leather in Deep black after i had to cancel my octavia RS order due to wait times. Should be picking it up next week! its a 12/13 build 2/14 compliance, but i don't mind as its still brand new to me!

Congrats mate. Similar to mine being a 2013 build 2014 compliance. It is brand new.

The kickdown switch also overrides the speed limiter if you have it set.

So my GTI PP has just on 4000km and is 6ish weeks old. A couple of issues.

1). I scratch a wheel. Grrr to me.
2). Someone decided to touch park using my rear bumper. Grrr to them.
3). The axle tramp, aka wheel hop, is driving me nuts even with traction control on. Grrr to VW

Re problem 3. Anyone with a GTI with 18's experience this as well?

I've tried higher pressures, lower pressures, comfort , normal, sports and it is the same result in wet or dry.

It may just be the Dunlop's, it may be the 19's, it may be sydney roads, but I can't believe that they thought this level of axle tramp was acceptable. Just in drive an comfort mode it will tramp before the TC kicks in.

I'm tempted to try the torque arm insert, but concerned they could use that as a reason to void a warranty claim on engine or DSG.

If 18" s are better, I may go down that route with some PS3's or PSS's

Any thoughts on the 18's or the insert and warranty?

Can't say I've experienced any hop issues, although I've only probably really driven it in hard enough on its maiden VWW cruise.

Obviously fiddling with components will impact warranty, but you're really only playing with low risk components (IMO) so I wouldn't be too concerned by that.

(I will be concerned by any wheel changes though so keep us posted )

I do get some wheel hops as well on the 19 santiagos, when launching hard from dead still. But, the road condition over the west has been wet for weeks so... I'm not too sure on the dry.

this has been discussed over on the occy thread and it seems as though alot of the axle tramp is due to the tyres. Both tyre type (brand) and pressures. Apparently the lower the pressure the better (less axle tramp) it is. I'd also try the insert but for me it hasn't improved things greatly so you may not get that much joy from it either to concern yourself over warranty issues. Also seems to be lesser of an issue for the guys who are running on eibach lowered springs. Keeping more weight over the front wheels on hard take off seems to help with lessening the axle tramp. So I would have though sports mode on the GTI PP would assist this. Can you also turn off the TC? Again from what I've read TC makes tramping worse.

I'm shocked to hear the GTI PP has axle tramp issues though as I thought the whizz bang LSD had sorted that out.

Axle tramp is controlled by learning how to apply the throttle properly instead of just mashing the go pedal. Too much power too early.

Don't agree samps. I don't get axle tramping until around the 4500-5000rpm. So not too much power too early. I have to short shift if I want to avoid it.

I'll be keeping an eye on what you do and the outcome as the axel tramp..wheel hop..what ever you want to call is terrible in my GTI PP. Yes, I've been told to be easier on the throttle but I've never driven a car that reacted so badly from a bit of heavy acceleration (particularly from a standing start). I would love to experiment and throw a set of 18's on it to see how it reacts when I'm bashing the thing. Actually, I'm looking for an excuse to purchase some new wheels so maybe this is an option.

No tramp coming out of a sweeping bends. Only in a straight line when both front wheels lose traction. You actually have more usable power when turning.

Axle tramp is controlled by learning how to apply the throttle properly instead of just mashing the go pedal. Too much power too early.

I know how to avoid it. It just shouldn't happen. Happens off the line, happens at 60kph. As soon as any slip occurs in a straight line it tramps, not just from stamping on the throttle.

Also it shouldn't tramp with the TC on in comfort mode.

When properly booting my GTI's from near standstill I've always had axle tramp. The Mk5 GTI did it, so did the Mk6 and unfortunately now my PP does it. My Merc A250 Sport did it a couple of times as well. I'm sure it has to do with traction control because my 60's Cooper S Minis just spin their wheels and never tramp . It's a good advertisement for 4WD I suppose. It just seems that you can't put too much power through front wheels I have Pirellis on the PP. Had it with Contis on the Mk 5 and Mk 6 and also Bridgestones. I think the key is to be gentle on the throttle, particularly in light rain. Are there any known fixes worth considering?

There's a few. ALK, dog bone insert/mount, eibach springs and michelin PS3s appear to do it the least.
