VW dealer and VW Australia do notdispute that the Highline has this functionality.
    From the brochure
Discover Media brings all the features from Composition Media plus more, including navigation.
When it comes to exploring this vast land, navigation has never been easier, thanks to the Discover
Media package (optional on Comfortline, standard on Highline) with two SD card slots for
navigation and media; 2D and 2.5D map views; and a 5.8” colour display with capacitive touch
screen. Also including a CD player, Auxiliary input, SD card slot, USB interface, MP3, WMA and
AAC music playback and you’ve got an amazing media and navigation package.
    No voice recognition mentioned

    • pologti18t: I'm not disputing the veracity of your quote, but I have taken my quote (below) from VW's publication for the MK7 Golf # "VGAG7MY13" - printed by Volkswagen Group Australia PtyLtd, 24 Muir Road Chulloro NSW 2390, ABN 14093117876. The publication date (ofmy copy) is "April 2013 "
You will find the following in the"Specifications" section on page 36 of the document above (about 1/3 from the-top-of-thepage)
Discover Media audioand satellite navigation system
5.8" colour touchscreen display with smartphone style HMI and proximity sensor, AM/FM radio, CDplayer and 2 x SD card slots for music and navigation data, 2D and 2.5D (bird'seye) map views, voice control fornavigation and radio functions (my bolding), compatible with MP3, WMA andACC music files, car menu with convenience and service settings, security coded
For the entry above , the table in the specifications page saysthat this option is NOT available for the 90TSSI, it is OPTIONAL for the 90TSIcomfortline, and it is STANDARD for the103TSI Highline and the 110TSI Highline.
As I said in my last post, neither the Dealership nor VW Australiadispute that the Voice command function is part of the Highline series. Theproblem is how to make it work

      • Ryan_R: I feel like I'm fighting a lone battle here against the assertion that VW does not support Voice Control for the Mk7 Golf. I'm not sure of the basis of your arguement that VW Highline models (in Australia) do not come standard with Voice Command but my contention (that they do have this functionality) is supported by the factual material that has been published by VW Australia (as quoted in my reply to pologti18t).
If you need further proof, you will aslo find mention of this functionality by a simple Google search (with the filter set to Australia). For example, I got the following quotation using Google search from "Between the Axles"

Volkswagen has launched its seventh generation Golf in Australia with a lower starting price, more powerful base engine and a standard 5.8-inch touchscreen entertainment system.
        103TSI Highline
(pictured above) and there’s a more powerful 103kW/250Nm version of the 1.4-litre engine, while the 7-speed DSG is standard. Other additional features include front fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, tinted tail-lights, ambient lighting and sportier front seats with alcantara (fake suede) inlays. The sound system is upgraded with addition of sat nav, a second SD card slot, and voice recognition for phone and nav control.

        • I already acknowledged earlier that VW has disabled the Voice Control feature for Australian cars late last year/early this year - their reason being because of issues with our accents. There's really nothing to add. Just wait until the VCDS guys work out which bit turns it on/off and you'll be able to enable it yourself if you borrow or buy the cable. Just like how I can choose in my Mk6 Golf whether the voice control button is enabled or if it works as a Mute button.

The marketing stuff is just a copy from overseas and something they've forgotten to alter.

Probably similar to the folding mirrors that aren't active, the Traffic Management add on to the RNS510 that isn't active and the speed zones that are not accurate.

            • Team_v: yes, the functions that you have identified are similar in that they are not supported in the Australian version of the Golf. But, the difference with voice command is that VW Australia have indicated that it is included in their models (as is evidenced in the published literature).
I don't doubt Ryan_R 's obvious expertise in the technical aspects of this problem, but from my perspective, the matter goes to the heart of the commercial relationship between a buyer and a seller. By this I mean that (I think that ) it is reasonable for the purchaser of a product to understand what it is that he is buying by reference to how the seller describes the item for sale.
Key to this understanding is the published material that the seller uses in his sale campaign. Without wishing to antagonise Ryan_R any further, I don't dismiss the importance of VW's advertising material so lightly. I'm not a lawyer, but I believe that the contract that I entered into for the purchase of my car is defined by the words on the actual piece of paper that I signed and the advertising material that VW published to describe the car. If VW said that I purchased a car with voice command, then I contend that it is reasonable for me to expect that I would get a car with voice command. Perhaps I'm being naive, in my position.

              • Don't worry, I completely understand and agree with you, I was just pointing out your best bet at solving the *technical* problem (not so much the behavioural one). Still, your dealer should send you a feedback/survey form at some point within a few months after purchase where you can vent your displeasure. I'd give the dealer principle the benefit of advising him your plans to do this (AFTER you have received the survey) in case he suddenly comes up with a way to enable the feature.

In my experience the voice control works best if you speak in a 'robotic' way similar to how you'd expect it to speak to you. It's also pointless trying to use it if you have passengers who are talking.

How's the rest of the car going?

                • Ryan_R: Thanks for your patient understanding of my frustration with VW Australia.
As to your question about the car generally and notwithstading the problems that I'm having with the infotainment system, I think that the Golf is a magnificant car! It some some quirky features that I'm still not used-to ( like the fact that I have to turn-off the bluemotion function every time that I restart the car, and the fact that I can't turn off the day time driving lights), but it's a real delight to drive. I just wish that the after sales customer service from VW Australia was better.

From memory both of those functions can be altered with the VCDS tool.
I know a lot of people have an issue with the start stop tech and deactivated it via VCDS in the MK6/Tiguan.

                    • May i draw people's attention to this at the bottom of VW brochures. It's common to ALL manufacturers.

i'm not familiar with VDCS system but I will do some research online.

                        pologti18t:
thanks for the info. At this stage I don' t think that VW Australia is using this facility (get out of jail free card) to avoid fixing my problem. I hope that it doesn't try this approach as it will ultimately affect their Brand value

                          • So my in-laws are having their Tiguan serviced this very moment. I asked them to ask VW dealer about the new GTI, and all they got was it's coming next week, no price or anything else. VW is really keeping details under-wraps, much more than the new iphone5s/5c
