Most likely the same amount of time as a customer order GTI will be.

    • Yep, the usual 4-6 month wait for A250. But i want a PP Golf GTI and it doesn't look like we are going to get it on Oz.
The professional service you receive at Mercedes is on another level to VW with offering corporate discounts, free servicing, reduced rates to park at the Merc dealer at the airports (probably still $200 a day though!! ).
It is amazing how good the Merc website is as well, particularly when compared to VW. I know driving the car is by far the most important thing but we are in a high tech computer age now (showing my age!) and ANY info i want on the car is there including clips explaining EVERY feature on the cars including options and how to access them via the central display etc etc.
Anyway should i wait for the PP GTI because I'm pretty sure it would be a better all round car (yes I've answered my own question) but it's so goddamn stylish and the interior is beautiful. If the ride wasn't so firm I probably would have already signed up

      • Check the UK VW website - probably has more info on features, how stuff works, etc.

          • I looked at the A250 and CLA200 on Saturday. The A250 boot is substantially smaller than the Golf's. The CLA's was much longer, and deeper I believe but no fold down seats and without the practicality of a hatch.

Compared with BMW, from an aesthetic and ergonomic perspective I think MB has lost the plot, especially when compared with BMW whose cars seem to have much more cohesive dashboards, an exemplar VW-Group cars follow fairly closely.

Mercs have improved stylistically on the outside (consider the A250, CLA 250 and updated E-Class compared with its downright chintzy predecessor) but still have a way to go to match BMW, or even VW/Audi, on the inside.

Of course, for the money, the Mark VII GTI is hard to beat and even trumps its pricier competitors in some areas.

If the answer to the Monty Hall problem was 50/50, the contestant, on average, would win the car 50% of the time simply by sticking with their original guess...but you can only win a one-in-three guessing game 33.33% of the time so it can't be 50/50, can it?

            • Yes UK website is better but still far from great. The A250 boot is definitely smaller than my current Mk 6 and will be smaller again with Mk 7. The boot opening is also much smaller. I love the interior on the Merc. It's different and a bit funky, definitely aimed at a younger crowd. The VAG interiors are still no. 1 for quality but are a tad boring. I actually love the Merc interior. I'm looking at a bit over 60 for a fully optioned A250. I'm sure the GTI will be close to that once optioned up to the Merc's level. It has bixenons as standard etc. I think the ergonomics in the Merc are pretty spot on, except for the sport/Eco/manual button for the automatic on the centre console, but like everything you'd get used to it. I also think the Merc big screen mounted up high with a toggle mousey thing is much safer to operate than a Golf touchscreen

                • That all makes sense; I suppose the Merc is more funky, offers Linguatronics or something for voice input over the Golf. The BMW interior is just a lot more understated, like Merc interiors used to be I suppose.

The like for like price comparison of the A250 and GTI will be interesting but for some, like me, the boot space will be a big factor and you are getting more metal for your money with the Golf, perhaps half a class size bigger if not a whole class . . . perhaps between an A and B Class. Main reason I discounted a 120d hatch back in 2008.

I think it's not too bad really. Considering model for model it's only $1k more and you get nav, adaptive chassis and reversing camera I think it evens out.

Yeah, but, for $1,000 more than the Mark VI VWA is including some $5200 in extra equipment, meaning $4200 better value than the Mark VI offered, I suppose, if you look at it that way.

Shame the PP is only available with DSG . . . it would have been an interesting option otherwise at 2500 less for a manual. It also makes a standard GTI with leather and bi-xenons look overpriced at around $46,500.

In light of that, perhaps VWA needs to create a "luxury" options package for the standard car comprising leather / roof / bi-xenons for $5,000 or something lest one be forced to seriously consider a . . . DSG to avoid overpaying for the same options on the standard car.

[Edit: While VWA should still offer a bundle of options on the standard GTI at a special price, it is now apparent that as Alcantara is not the same as $3150 worth of leather trim the effective price difference between a standard GTI and a GTI PP is $1850 on a like-for-like basis, not minus $1300 as I apprehended when I wrote this post.]

Probably have to wait until the brochure comes out, they have much more detail in the specs section and should mention it there.

For instance, my Polo brochure mentions the fact you get LED rear license plate lights with the Xenons

On another note, it kinda sucks that they've taken the individuality away from the GTI. It just feels like a bulk item now, like you go to VW and say "Can I have some GTI please?" and they sorta wheel one out luck of the draw style.
