Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • You can register your interest in the GTI now on the Volkswagen Aust website. Hopefully there is a drive day invite like the Mk 6 had.

        • With this amount of kit, the RRP won't be reduced by much if any at all!

          • pretty short options list compared to NZ who get the 19s, keyless, discover pro and dynaudio

would only be going for the bixenons at this stage

10 grand more!!?! The added stuff wouldn't even add that much considering what's standard on the UK spec

                • So base on this, it looks like thegolf R will be about 60k. Hmmmm an Audi s3 from 59kor a M135 from 65k would be a much better buy!

VW cant possibly be that silly right...?

                    • The GTI was never going to be priced under 40 grand when the TSI and TDI are close to 40 on the road. As they come standard with sat nav, Bluetooth etc etc the GTI was always going to have these as standard as well. In this day of cars coming with more technology and gadgets with each new model and generally always cheaper technology, a stripped out GTI would never sell ( not in large numbers anyway). If they were Porsche they'd charge more for less like the 911 RS anyway! The Golf family is amazing value when compared to the Mk 6 now. I paid well over 50 grand for mine with heaps of options that look like being standard now and I don't want leather this time anyway. I'm worried we might not get the PP now though with the R coming ( which can't be priced too close to the Audi). You can't even buy a Commodore these days without heaps of gadgets as the technology is so much cheaper

As for being competitive... what's the price of an A250 or BMW 125i?

How is it 10K more? They prices in the article are supposedly on road. Dealers are trying to flog 5 door Mk6 Gtis with 18 inch wheels for 45K+

Check out www.redbook.com.au for all the retail prices and the official cost of options, it's great research.

Isn't Audi meant to be competing with Merc and BMW though? The price difference between an R and a S3 is going to be pretty thin.

Going by how they priced the car in the UK with all the additional gear it got there (xenon's, rear LEDs, discovery pro) and taking into account the saturated market and prevailing sentiment (VW's are unreliable) they would be crazy to price it any higher than the mk6.

If they price as indicated by caradvice I will be buying a focus st for 10k less or a gt86 gts for 7k less. I might even keep my mk6 for a bit longer.

A focus St isn't 10K less. Focus ST is 42.5K on road.
