I say this in the nicest possible way, there a lot of people who talk pure giraffe droppings online.

Except in this instance it was Zman's dealer talking rubbish, you can definitely get discounts of more than 2% on a GTI. I think VWW is usually a pretty good source of info..

There's nothing more annoying than thinking you got a good deal, then reading on this forum others having done better than yourself. The first reaction is to dismiss those who claim prices far better than what you obtained, but what if they were true? Sour grapes? My advice to anyone is to take your time, shop around and seek referrals, such as from forum members. Also, corporate program discounts make a significant difference, as dealers receive a substantial rebate from Volkswagen Australia. If you are not eligible for this discount, then accept the fact you will pay more.

            • What is the exact criteria for corporate discount eligibility?

                1. The company you are employed by is a corporate client of Volkswagen Group Australia.
                2. You are a full-time employee of this company.
                3. The vehicle forms part of your salary or remuneration package.
                4. The vehicle will be registered in your name.

Note: Audi Australia's corporate program eligiblity criteria only requires compliance with items 1 (replace VGA with AA), 2 and 4. It also includes free servicing for 3 years, which VGA do not.

From my short time on this forum so far, everyone had been welcoming and friendly. You all sound like a great bunch of guys and this forum will be a bonus on top of owning a gti.

I do think that dealer was bs. He was the first I saw so I'll see how the others are this week.

It can be disheartening to learn that someone paid less than you but not everyone can be expert bargainers or have corporate discounts. All you can do is set yourself a limit on what you think a car is worth and be happy with getting a great car at a price you're willing to pay.

Also another thing to note is the freight cost to get the vehicle to the dealer is going to be different depending on where the ship docks and where the dealer is located. So that has to be factored into the price of the car also.

If the car with the specs and colour that you want is in another dealers stock and has to be transferred there's an additional cost on top so the actual cost of the car will be different depending on where it has come from, how long it has been sitting there and where it eventually gets sold from. So even though the retail price may be the same the actual cost price of the car varies depending on it's history.

Obviously if a car is being ordered it should (hopefully) have the lowest cost for the dealer so they should have the most room to move. But then again they probably think you must really want the car if you're prepared to wait 6 months and don't have to discount it much - so you're buggered either way

Have they tightened the criteria recently? When i bought mk6 R, the car was registered in my company name and the discount was for being a member of AMA.

The deal brokered with the AMA several years ago offering members a discount does not require you to be an incorporated company. The company discount outlined by others above is a completely separate entity, and does rely on the criteria as listed.
To receive the AMA discount you must be a member for at least three months.

                        • Same three month membership as individual with each of the state based law societies (and presumably numerous other professional bodies).

                          • Yep, this is how I accessed it. Members of the ICAA and CPA Australia also qualified.

However as I've mentioned previously the discount appears a lot less this time around, but I was able to negotiate in addition to it..

                            • The corporate program has been tightened significantly in the last 12 months or so, yes.

To clarify one point: the organisation or company you are a member of or work for does not explicitly need to be a client of VWA. However, VWA maintains a list of eligible entities; if you are a member or an employee of one, then you have a shot; otherwise you don't. You should ask your dealer whether your employer or any of your professional association memberships are eligible. This list has been culled substantially in the last year or so.

(Contrasting this to the Audi corporate program, if you work for any company in the ASX200 - amongst others - you're eligible.)

Might have to source the updated criteria and list on the quiet some time.

I'd be somewhat annoyed if they culled my professional membership (as someone who can and has directed business to VW through my client base) v some spreadsheet jockey at a top 200 ASX company who does nothing for the brand.
