Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Yeah, I still don't understand how some of that stuff works. Here's a few hints to save you wading through the manual:

ACC is great, just set the following distance you prefer, and be prepared to put your foot on the accelerator when your car believes a turning car in front of you is a mortal threat. Also some of the time it won't undertake a slow lane hog in the overtaking lane.

No Mk 7/7.5 Golf R will park itself as standard (possibly something to do with requiring a different reversing camera)

Driver profiles - you're on your own there, I haven't set anything (but I believe there are up to 4 and they can be linked to different keys)

If the car thinks you are going to run into something at slow speeds it will jam the brakes on, HARD and scare the crap out of you and everyone else around )

Rear cross-traffic alert is good, but not super sensitive/quick so I back out slowly

If you have the matrix LED headlights the fancy masking stuff doesn't work in Eco mode.

It is possible to temporarily switch off keyless entry by pressing the Lock button on the remote then touching the lock portion of the door handle within a second or so.

Many people dislike the auto stop/start function so they disable it (several methods to do that).

If the fake engine sound annoys you it can be turned down or off (but not through any of the menus).

      • For me, I can't buy a car if it doesn't have a sunroof. Love them.
I like the extra light you get with the sun viser open in the winter and breeze through the car when the roof open.
With just the sunroof open, I get no shutter in the car. IMO cars looks better with the moonroof but, when open, look terrible from the outside (the winder buffer pop up at the front).

So yeah, each to their own and like those of you who can't understand why people like sunroofs, I can't understand why you don't like them

I find auto stop/start is really good with the manual as it only turns off when you are in neutral with the clutch out, ie. you are expecting to be stopped for a little while, and back on as soon as you start pushing the clutch in again. My wife has auto stop/start in her auto Ford Focus and it is very annoying cutting in and out in stop start traffic, especially approaching busy roundabouts, so I turn it off when I drive her car. No such issue with a manual.

kennyc - the wind noise was interfering with the Dynaudio..

But yes, the greatest forum solution: each to their own.

I have no idea behind the mechanics of ACC on VW cars, but I'm aware on at least some Mercs that it works by constantly pulsing the rear brakes to control speed and effectively liberal use of it basically rips through a set of rear brakes in 20k.

I just pay attention the old school way.

            • Yeah Dutch, I might just stick to the Speed Limiter function (which I’m still yet to master the controls for).

This is what I use extensively in all my previous/other cars and prefer it to any form of cruise control since I am physically still controlling the throttle.

Also, short of getting random lettered euro plates to cover the number plate backing on the rear of the wagon ... what options to I have apart from leaving it as it is ?

The Golf hatches don't seem to have this problem.

IMO the ACC is definitely worth persisting with. I use mine much more than the regular CC in my other vehicles (I'm sure it has saved me from a couple of speeding fines already, it is so easy to speed in an R). On my R it only applies the rear brakes on steeper downhills where engine braking is insufficient, or if I've changed the requested speed to 20+kmh slower. NB Eco mode "coasts" without engine braking so may use the brakes a lot more when using ACC.

The black stuff behind the rear number plate is quite easy to remove, it is just some kind of felt glued to the paint (you may need a solvent to remove the glue residue, and may want to put a spacer behind the number plate so it isn't touching the bodywork).

                • Make sure you and your wife master the driver profiles.

I got an earful from mine when she couldn't figure out how to get the digital speed to display on the active info display...

I'll need to master profiles and set hers up before I can teach her lol

Quite a jump tech wise from an mk2 RS Octavia.

                    • I didn't even realise they came with a plate backing on the rear; presumably mine was either not fitted or removed by the dealer prior to delivery (noting as pictured is with a [covered] slim line SA plate which was on the car before sold).

Definitely the way to go though.

Tell me about it. I'm still figuring things out after owning it for a year. BTW my missus still likes our Octy and is resisting any and all attempts to sell it. I figure, what the heck, if she wants to keep it she can (and it is a great car which we wouldn't get anything much for selling it).

                          • Almost 3 months old and the first minor aesthetic mods have gone on. Bugs me the coolant cap isn't horizontal. Now just need HP to get the matching washer caps in to complete the picture.

Hopefully getting the tint sorted in the next week or so then wheels will be on the agenda
