Was noisy when opened - needed at least two other windows open to stop the buffering sound. Partner also not a fan of direct sun into car especially on hot days. Found I didn’t use it much and certainly not enough to justify the cost. Also talking to the sales rep when buying the R, he stated even when closed it does make the car hotter inside. Besides I haven’t got enough hair to blow in the wind

That's interesting. I would guess that is due to the panel being glass, and a large glass panel at that, which absorbs even more heat. I wish car makers would return to the steel panel sunroofs of old. The lass panels look like an afterthought and remind me of crappy aftermarket sunroofs from the 1970's and 1980's. The older style steel sunroofs look more integrated and are not susceptible to heat transfer.

Sunroofs are great in theory but not a deal breaker if one cannot get a car with them. At least two of my past cars have had a factory one. Although I never had any issues like leaks etc I found that with the wind buffeting I hardly every used them.

My current car does not have a sunroof and I don't miss it.

            • The current crop of "panoramic" sunroofs look absolutely horrible when in use as well.

I wasn't going to pay for one on the R, and did not miss it.

              • I really don’t understand why people want sunroofs in this country. In the UK maybe (I did enjoy the one on my Mk 2 Golf) but not in heat riddled Australia.

We got given a free sunroof on our CX-9 because of the spec we chose. We never use it and the sun block screen is permanently closed.

Do people mainly use them at night or something?

Don't they call them a "Moon roof" in the US?

Actually - yes, that was about the only time I did.

Oh and when we were in Cairns, Junior loved to watch a tropical storm through the glass driving along.

Being a boatie, as well as heat I was thinking of the weight aloft thing. As if my finely honed sense of car handling and balance would actually notice 10kg or so up there.

                      Yeah, righto.

                      • I'm prepared to be a contrarian.
Loved the sunroof in my V6 4Mo Bora. Used it regularly, for 13+ years !
So a sunroof was a logical must-have option for my R.
Living in NSW, near the coast, I use the sunroof year-round, day and night.
Only exceptions are occasional very hot days, when its raining, and high speed driving.
I do understand there's many parts of our country where a sunroof would be of limited value.
Many parts are just generally too hot, too wet, or too humid for comfort.
                        YMMV

Agree with this, I originally didn't want one.. wife demanded one in our Tig.. am glad we got it as the Pano roof opens the whole cabin up.

Given how much I actually used it I made sure it was optioned on my new R.

                          • My Grid R came with a sunroof as I bought off the lot and that was all they had. After getting all ready to hate it, I actually really like it. Living in Canberra means the sun beaming through the roof in the winter months in autumn though spring is actually quite welcome. The large size of it gives the car a convertible feel too. And in summer, if it gets really warm I'll just slide the cover shut. While I wouldn't have optioned it up if I was ordering my car off the line, I am certainly not disappointed with it.

                            • Our R Grid wagon comes with the massive sunroof ... and the young ones are over the moon .. no pun intended. Like most on here, I was not keen on it but it seems everyone else love it.

Also, I still need to work out how the DAP stuff works ... car is too techy for me. What's this ACC stuff ... does the car park itself ... two driver profiles ?! Hope my wife works out how to use the car cos I can't be bothered going through the manual ...

                              • Living in Brisbane I'm not a fan of sunroofs. My Mrs loves them. We had one in our Ix35 and I must admit it was good to watch the rain hit the glass and on a barmy summer night was good to have open but during the day it's just too bloody hot. Also the full length sunroofs like in the tiguan look so much better than half a sunroof like in the golf.

Could have had a manual with DAP and sunroof for the same price as DSG with only DAP. I chose the latter.
