Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Nice. I am on iOS with no android options, so I think im going to start with Carista on iOS which I believe can do a fair few of the basis changes (and its a $39 device + free 30 day full usage versus $159 OBD11 Pro device + upwards of $300+ for basic android).

My top 3 are disable fake sound, disable start/stop and disable infotainment safety warning (this last one really annoys me). Carista worth price alone for these ones. Dont think it can do the traffic info, but I don't yet have a full list of what it can do. Anyone had much experience with Carista ?

yeah the Rs are super quiet, but some of that is good insulation I think. When my wife drives off in the wagon, the exhaust note isn't bad from the outside. She also says that she can hear me coming from way down the street sometimes...probably shouldn't do the res delete, might push my luck on the home front.

Will disable the sound fakery asap, though to date have been ignoring race, and going individual with everything on race but for fake sound. On a few spirited drives with windows down, can hear rather nice sounds and even decent pops/crackles on overrun. With windows up, not so much.

Coming from a soft top car that sets off car alarms in underground car parks when I drive by, I’m kinda liking the more subtle exhaust, well at least my hearing is ...

            • Just got my R tinted by Rob from Hunters Hill. I think it looks pretty good. And the dash rattle has materialised pretty badly (was there before the windows were tinted), even get a high frequency buzz higher up in the rev range (circa 5000rpm).

Not sure what tint Rob uses, but he’s been around for a long time and only uses good products. Pretty sure he put 50% on the back and 22% on the front doors. Gives a combined result of 16% at the back and 18% in the front. It’s pretty dark.

It’s great during the day. Bit dark of a night in the rain, but lol give it a bit and get used to it. Don’t think it’s any darker than any of our other cars and they are fine. I think it’s just that it’s only a week old and I haven’t got the hang of it yet at night.

                      • Do the back windows need to be tinted because they come with privacy glass anyway which is darker?
I just had the front 2 windows tinted to match the rear glass.

                        • Privacy glass contains no UV protection, so tinting the rears makes sense if you've got people in the back.

I then added in blinds for junior in the back, so I ended up with a full black out look from the right angles.

                              • Well, after 13 years of a GTI in my drive (1 Mk5 & 2 Mk6s) I am moving onto an R - ordered today and pick up in 3 weeks - DSG. White with everything bar the sunroof. It will still be kept company with my partner’s Polo.
