Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • G TODD, best advice re tuning is get a tune with local support and good customer service. If you are reasonably located to Muller and Muller then I'd recommend visiting them and going APR. They probably have the best customer feedback around recently.

APR probably has the runs on board with stage 1 tune with highest numbers, backed up with 1/4 mile times. Jb1 is great for tuning box and most likely best option to retain warranty.

YOu also have Mark at recode who does custom tuning, one of best in business by reviews.

The you have option of Unitronic if you want to flash/unflash from home.

Do you want tuning box, flash tune, tune from home or custom tune? I personally would pick custom tune, I have APR stage 1 and stage 2 running perfectly since first release but I'm in melbourne and no custom options that I'm aware of.

In next few weeks I'll be swapping to the new OEM+ tune as I lost my 2 local APR dealers when all the issues occurred back in April. So I'm swapping to get tune with local support, dealer that's my mechanic now and have good rapport with.

I would love to see some fair comparisons between these two

since I have 5 years of warranty left, I will probably just go with the JB1 - results of about 370hp & 510Nm at the crank seem possible with just the jb1 & good for mid to low 12's on the 1/4 - which would be fine for me.

        • just bear in mind tuning box is an interceptor - it fools signals to the ECU, plainly speaking, it would tell the ECU it's only got 10psi boost so the ECU would up the boost back to where it thinks it should be. Yes good for the ability to remove it and install it as needed, but it'll never be as good as a full flash tune which has more precise control of more engine parameters.

          • yes, I'm fully aware of the differences - I also had a JB4 on a twin turbo bmw 335i a couple of years ago - that turned into an absolute animal with just that mod alone. I understand the gains on the R won't be quite as good as on the 3.0 N54, but if it come close as I suspect - I will be happy with that.
            thanks

I think they are one and the same or Mullerhaus. I think Paul Muller is the main person to contact. Just check out Mk7R owners of facebook. They have 10% sale at present too.

              • SevenR, I have nothing against JB1, George is great with customer service and havent heard anything negative about it. Only draw back is that tuning box, not proper tune. I think they do it very well and results great. Very close to flash tunes and more than enough power/torque. Best option for you with 5 year warranty for sure.

There's so much more to a tune or piggyback than whether it produces enough power for your tastes. It's as much about maintaining an appropriate (safe) fuel/air mixture, timing and advance, as it is raw power and torque. I don't want to turn this into a tuning discussion (again, check out the tuning and performance section - loads of detailed threads in there on the subject), but given the well-documented history of R and GTI turbo failures, and an understanding of how tuning boxes increase performance based on a limited subset of sensor inputs and by adjusting a subset of performance-improving parameters, there's no way I'd let one within 50 feet of my engine.

                    • the turbo's have gone through many revisons since some failures happened - one of the reasons I bought the newest R I could (april 16 build), so your audi might be at more risk than my car even with a JB1
flash tunes can be done poorly too dont forget & if/when I get another Juicebox I might put the car on a dyno to check AFR's and plug it into a knockbox. Like I said, I ran my 335i on a JB & had nothing but a great experience - Its fine by me if you wouldnt touch one.

                        • I vistied Dean at Fast Stuff today and swapped my stage 2 APR across to new OEM+ tune. I wasn't expecting much difference as I know both basically been done by same people. I had really one wish and that was no more turbo flutter/surge sound and happy to say it's gone. Car power deleivery is as smooth as ever and I'd say top end pull slightly better.

I'm more than happy and no doubt many of you that are customers of Dean, Guy etc will be swapping across.

                          • Saw this on Facebook. Two door version. Matte wrap. If you zoom in onto the hood you will see a R logo stencil which appears to be slightly raised. Also I like the look of the car without the big VW badge in the middle.

G.T, they will have a stage 1 for sure I'm not sure on exact numbers, like the stage 2 it will be very similar to APR. Was always going to be as Guy Harding had lots to do with both tunes. I was happy with APR tunes and only swapped as wanted to stick with Dean and Guy and have locally designed tune with local support. I have noticed that as well as no flutter sound, my oil temps slightly lower and defintitely pulls harder to red line.

Fast stuff contact 95803278 or Dean's mobile 0418 347 387. Give him a call and ask about it, he is awesome to deal with and will answer any questions you have and more. Other than that can always call Guy Harding at Harding performace and ask him too. More than happy to answer questions and give advice. I've had all my mods installed by him, servicing. I doubt you would find anyone that doesn't have good reviews of him. He just loves VAG cars and european, has them himself and runs products he supports.
