Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Anyone thinking of or done sway bars? After all my power mods etc, I'm now contemplating upgrading handling a bit.

Looking for better handling/cornering without major upgrades or losing too much ride comfort!

    Car not tracked at all.

Or Anyone with the VWR springs. Are they worthwile handling upgrade. Just looking for bit better grounded feeling.

    Thanks.

    • I am in the thinking department on sway bars for my R too. I have the VWR springs and in my opinion worth it from a handling and looks perspective. They have reduced body roll with car sitting much flatter through the corners. If you are not tracking your car, the springs would be all I would do. If you are going to regularly do track days then sway bars are worth it. I do track mine hence why I am looking at sway bars to really tighten up the body roll. Probably go with the VWR option on these too

          • Hey all,

Been a while since I have posted and have an interesting one for you all. Would love to hear if anyone is having the same issue.
Had the haled pump fail on me about 2 months ago and got that replaced under warranty. was pretty interesting driving the R as a FWD car without halex. Got dragged by an Aus Post van If anyone is interested happy to provide info on what happened for the masses.

My main concern at the moment though, is that every time i do some "enthusiastic" driving, when i get out of the car, there is a very strong clutch smell. By enthusiastic I mean, revving to 5000 in most gears and giving it a push through some twisties for about 10 km. Car is completely warm including oil etc. This is after 10 minutes of cruising prior to pushing the car at all.

Is this something that others have experienced, or potentially a suspect clutch / DSG problem??

            Welcome peoples thoughts on this.

            Thanks

            Blabba.

            • How many kilometres do you have on the car? Haven't yet had that issue and I have done a lot of sustained spirited driving let's say.

              • Just about to hit 19k. It's been very noticeable for quite a few months. And that's even after a few k's cool down.
If you take it s dealer it's impossible to re-create for obvious reasons.

                  • Think so. Just seems more prevalent since. So could be related.

                    • If you think the smell was there before and if it was then you would hope it would be coming from elsewhere

When in Individual mode with engine in sport, the throttle is much sharper. But only for a while. If you leave it permanently in that mode it softens off somewhat. A quick switch to Eco and straight back again and it's all different. I'm talking switching over and back while at the lights so it's not a perception thing. Anyone else noticed this?
No one really answered this last time so I'm bumping it. The Brits are noticing this issue too in both DSG and manual cars. As well as the throttle sharpness softening off it would seem that the exhaust isn't as loud either - more noticeable on the over run. The car changes to this 'half race' mode either with time or on restarting the engine. Pressing Race again changes it all back, it just won't stay there. It's like you can have Race mode, but only for a wee while. Same thing with putting the engine into sport mode via the individual button.

                          Any takers on this?

                          • Might need someone like guy harding to chime in as he being a tuner he may be able to provide some insight. Mine has had some apr love so I don't get any noticeable difference from normal to sport other than the louder exhaust. I do agree though that if engine is in sport mode for along time, I reckon it does get quieter.

                            • I had a great surprise from my wife yesterday for my birthday, she asked me if she could borrow my car because someone at work wanted to see a Golf R to decide whether to get one or not, I say ok and we swap cars I got the Scirocco for the day, then she came back and I noticed something different in my car, it was Low... what ... yes VW racingline springs were installed in the car how cool is that...I love my wife.
I also like to thank all the guys at Harding Performance and Prestige&Performance for helping my wife with all this, I really liked it and certainly the car will look a lot better when the wheels arrive.

Sergio, that's some wife you have. Congratulations on your birthday. The lowered stance certainly looks great. The VWR springs you now have fitted have had mixed reviews regarding the preservation of the stock ride. I would be keen to hear your future views once you have got to know them better. Cheers.
