Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. Leather definitely looks "schmikest", but I've always preferred the feel of fabric. The stuff they use nowadays is super durable and breathes really well. It just needs more care with vacuuming. It wouldn't have bothered me if the R wasn't available with leather for whatever reason.

      • I had leather in my GTI and it looked awesome, back to fabric in my R and will never get leather again. The feel is much better and doesn’t need as much up keep.

          <smirk>

I tend to not park in the sun much, or have the sun shade up if I do (and park into the sun then).

Had leather in my Mk6 GTI and was ok, still looked fresh after three years with zero maintenance. Tried cloth in my Mk7 mainly for the tartan look which was nice - but more upkeep and couldn't imagine a plain finish in a $50k+ car.

The Audi and BMW finish was obviously a step up, but the Nappa used in the 7.5 Wolfsburg looks the goods and feels amazing. I sometimes find myself rubbing the passenger seat at the lights..

            • That’s the one...meanwhile dealers saying they can’t drop the price.

Can’t or won’t? Clearly they can. You have seen my invoice. I’m very happy with the deal I got

                • Yep. You got the best deal I’ve seen, thanks for sharing the details. will put out a few calls tomorrow, end of the month and all...

                  • They definitely can - I was under that as well, and had a Jetta loan car for two months provided.. but yes, it can be frustrating when a dealer won't budge.

                    • Finally got a dealer who was happy to meet what I was prepared to pay, not as low as some of those other prices, but gotta leave something in it for them.

Assuming the don’t sell it before they get me the paperwork.

                      • Congratulations.

Contrary to what some believe there really isn't that much in it for them at dealer level once the prices approach these numbers.

                        • Hi guys, just wondering for the Golf R what you'd suggest regarding:

                          - tinting
                          - paint protection
                          - vinyl protection
                          - leather protection
                          - carpet & fabric protection

I'm in SA, & my car will be in Lapiz Blue, so I'm wondering whether the paint protection might be a good idea? Anyone have a view re Opticoat or Gyeon Mohs or some other type of paint protection? I'm certainly keen to do the tinting. And does a lifetime warranty for these things from the dealer have value??

                          thanks for any suggestions.

Yes for tint, just keep it legal.

Paint, if you're after a local Opticoat guy let me know and I can hopefully still get a sweeter price for you (or mention me off the VWW forum).

I'd do the other stuff yourself if/when you feel like it. Some good products available through Car Care Products, assuming they're still around (used to sponsor the forum).

Edit: lifetime warranty - sure, if you're planning on keeping the car 15 years and expect the relevant companies to still be around

                            • I used hamish at Elite finish for opticoat and tint. I'm going to put some Bowdens stuff on the leather today.

                              • Yep, Care Care Products are still around. Just bought a heap of Gyeon stuff from them and topped up on Menzerna.

Have just applied Gyeon 'Q2 Rim' to the wheels. Looking forward to seeing how it performs. The Gyeon Wet Coat is incredible. Doubt it will hold up compared to my personal favourite sacrificial, 'Over Coat' by Kamikaze, but the convenience is great.

Also bought a 3" DA (not from CCP) for those bloody B Pillars!
