Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mechanic recommendations south west Sydney

    Hi all,

I need timing belt and waterpump done on my 1.4 2017 Golf, VW have quoted $2300 which seems steep especially as I will be forced to use OEM parts which are clearly faulty. I am based in Oran park, I know Pacortech are close by and specialists, however they wont do timing belt on my version (CZCA - apparently a pain). Does anyone have any recommendations, I am actually happy to travel 20-30km for a decent mechanic at fair price.

    Thanks in advance.

I would have ordinarily recommended Pacortech as they did my waterpump, thermostat and coolant tank for about $1.5K. Shame they won't do the timing belt!

I've seen a new Euro specialist in Smeaton Grange advertising on local social media, but I have no first hand experience with them.

What about European Autowerks in Narellan? Or Southwest Automotive in Campbelltown. Both specialise in European cars.

Ha after posting this last night and seeing Pete's response I did a bit more digging and Autowerks was one I was going to call today and the other was Southwest European Auto in Smeaton grange which is I think is the one Pete also alluded to. Reviews although not many were very good for Southwest and upon calling he knew straight away that my car doesn't necessarily need water pump and timing belt done at same time (different sides of engine), I need water pump as I have a leak though. Quoted $1500 and booked in for Monday (Paul wakeling VW wanted $2300 and couldn't book me in till 9th April).

Will update here once work is done in case anyone else is interested in future.

Thanks for input from you both.

Good stuff - please let us know how you go! He's the closest Euro specialist to me - I'm just down the road from you at Harrington Park.

Just got car back. Very happy, Scott knows his stuff (I think ex Lamborghini Technician), was very through, talked me thorough all the work he had done, showed me all old parts/boxes taken off car (not required but shows he had done the work for those less knowledgeable). Workshop was immaculate and pricing very reasonable.

I had planned to do an oil change myself before I noticed coolant leak so asked if he was ok to do with my supplied parts (oil, oil filter etc), had no problems with that and mentioned I want to replace brakes in next few months (I want to try some Brembo's), said he is happy for me to either source myself and provide, or he can obtain.

Very happy and will be using him going forward.
