Is the cover an important element to prolong the life of the battery? I recall reading they may provide thermal protection. If not, I will just use the larger battery and dispose of the case. If it is important, has anyone else come across this problem with replacement Varta OEM batteries?
You might find that your original battery was 242mm x 175mm x 190mm.
    The new battery sounds like a Varta E44; 278mm x 175mm x 190mm.

You can pick up a new battery case (soft) with cover; VW Part No. 1K0915411B to suit the larger size battery.

That is exactly what I am doing also.

      • 2008 Golf GT TDI - still going on original battery in sub-alpine temps (Canberra/Braidwood). It is cranking a little longer atm but it has been really cold recently. Also the car isn't driven every day. Parked in the open. I'm surprised (and happy). Kind of expect it to die this winter.

Bosch batteries can be gotten at Costco for a good price.

          • Could be another 2 years. The warranty on the Varta might be over by the time you need it.

Battery is up off the concrete?

BatteryWorld guy said he expects 6 - 8 years out of them if they are well maintained. I suppose that puts you into that range now... so ????

I've bought a CTEK charger to help maintain mine (mostly because I tend to do a lot of very short trips these days).

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

                  change of case material?

I was denied a warranty claim on 20+ batteries because they were stored on concrete - Exide guy.

We had to go through the charade of charging them, selling them, fitting them, having them fail to start the car & doing individual claims. Maybe the guy was just a nob. mid-80s so he probably was.

                    • I don't use any of the 'convenience' items, incl door activated interior lights etc which, I suspect, leads to 'voltage' issues over time.

                      • My battery packed it in last week and I figured I had a good run from the original, car bought new September 2011, almost made 4 winters. The only warning signs were slightly longer cranking for two or three starts in the early hours and slightly higher idle a couple of times ( not DPF regens I believe ). I run everything electrical nearly all the time ( I love toys ) DRLs, foggies when needed etc. I do a large percentage of starting/driving at night and last six months or so it has been mainly short trips in and around BrisVegas. 125,244 km at the time of failure. All in all I am a happy Golfer.

                          • How many of you use Delkor batteries?

I've sold one to a mk6 owner so far and he seems happy with it,and have been using them myself in other cars for over a decade now,and have never had one fail inside of 5yrs.

                            • Hi all my battery is on the way out been reading this thread looks like most ppl recommend the OEM Varta batteries as replacement. Just after any other options and where to buy any of the batteries. Any good places with good specials on them?

                              Thanks all!

                              • Varta & Bosch silver come out of the same factory - so that opens up your options a bit.

I bought my Varta from BatteriesDirect but I'm sure there are options local to you (that make warranty easier).

Look at Yuasa & Panasonic as well
