I just Binged Varta Perth & the answer is the #1 hit (challenge batteries, Federal Batteries). Supercheap used to sell Bosch. They both come out of the same factory I'm told. About $230-$250 in the East so $250-$270 with overpaid miners Perth tax I'd guess
You use Bing??
You underestimate the Perth overpaid miners tax. It's more like 50%.

Stupid company default, locked down search engine. We're also locked into IE and because of conflicts with our asset management system we are still on V 8.0 or 9.0 (I don't look because it makes me cry).
Thank God for PortableApps
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums

I can get a Century for about $220, but others in this thread have mentioned Varta and Bosch. Anyone know who to go to in Perth for these brands?
just ebayed Optima Red - they have come down in price $260 delivered, I reckon might be a better choice than Century? I had two Centuries which did not last more than three years. Mate has the red in his Patrol and reckons its been very good.

Probably need to take it to PM if you want to know more.
I know nothing about Optima batteries. I had a good run (5+ years) out of the OEM Varta so went with that again.

Throughout winter, my GTI has been a little more hesitant to turn over - it still only takes one crank of the starter motor to go, but sounds lethargic. Coming into warmer weather I reckon I'll get another 6 months out of it, so 5.5 years is pretty good going.

Beware , I had a service early july , dealer noted battery was down suggested trickle charge , which I can do but ignored .
Drove yesterday , no problems , this morning totally dead , I mean dead , so how do I get in , mmm books are in car .
Called RAA , yes there is a little clip on the door handle drivers door , remove and expose key hole , always read your manual .
New heavy duty , $195 , bliss , that's a worry 3 years and 2 months a dead battery , admittedly I do a lot of short trips .
So my battery just died on my 2.4 year old GTI MK6 2011 build. The last couple of days she seemed a bit slower cranking over then suddenly yesterday she just didn't want to start and all I got was a clicking noise coming from under the bonnet and the dash flickering. Have booked her in to VW tomorrow. This will be covered under warranty right!?

Yeah I was checking this last night however nothing was noted with regards to the battery being excluded.
The receptionist at VW service this morning noted that batteries are not covered under warranty. Guess we will have to wait and see!
plenty of people seem to have had their battery done under warranty right through to the end of 3 years. I always found that unusual as the standard is 12 months for most new cars.
if it's a multi-franchise dealership then the receptionist probably hasn't a clue.

I didn't bother investigating warranty as I wanted a deeper cycle battery to try to reduce this low life issue (mine has drained fully twice while listening to radio when working on car which I think heavily reduced its life, also a couple of times not driving it for weeks at a time).
So Volkswagen removed and replaced battery under warranty.
Notes:
"carried out fault scan found relay fault due to flat battery. Carried out battery test found defect in battery."
Ours made it almost to 5 years, although I have been nursing it along with a battery charger for the past year (it wouldn't start if the car was left unused for more than a week or if you had the interior lights on for over half an hour).
I replaced the stock piddly 530 CCA DIN 55 battery with a 670 CCA DIN 65 which fits the battery tray perfectly.

Be grateful you don't own a current BMW twin turbo V8.
Green Car Reports has a story in the current edition that says at EACH 10,000 mile oil change a NEW 105ah battery need to be installed due to the current draw required to circulate coolant through the twin turbos situated in 'the valley' ......all to guarantee reliability, I guess.
I've just purchased a new battery for my 2.0 TDI (Varta OEM). It fits in the holder but the little foam case thingy doesn't fit over it. The new battery is larger (both in dimensions and capacity) so I returned it to see if I could get one of the same capacity as the old factory one but I was told they're all of those dimensions now irrespective of capacity.
Is the cover an important element to prolong the life of the battery? I recall reading they may provide thermal protection. If not, I will just use the larger battery and dispose of the case. If it is important, has anyone else come across this problem with replacement Varta OEM batteries?
