  • I failed to mention that not all undesirable gases have odours that a human can detect. An activated carbon filter should be able to capture such gases as well.

I do not believe that to be the case. The filter media of an activated carbon product is usually grey in appearance, whereas the filter media of an ordinary cabin filter is usually white.

In general, manufacturers usually specify a replacement interval for cabin filters (carbon activated or not). Volkswagen of course, have their own recommendations, depending on the individual market.

I leave it for any owner to decide whether to follow that schedule, or whether they make their own determination as to when it should be replaced (if at all).

This is the filter for a MK6: VW Sharan Tiguan Cabin Pollen Filter Active Carbon Mann Hummel 1K2819653 | eBay

You can "blow" the filter out all you like to remove dust/dirt etc, but you wont get rid of the stench unless you get a new filter.
Hi Lucas, does the filter in your eBay link fit golf mk6? I was looking through the details and it only mentions Tiguan and sharan. I was after a few pollen filters but the description does not clearly state compatibility to golfs

      • Yes, it does.

Add a B to the part number if you want a carbon-activated one.

seems like a stealership price. a puncture repair is maybe $30 tops. teh 30k km service is $250 from a vag independent, wipers are $50 from wiperblades.uk. decent car wash is maybe $50.

                • Does anyone have a recommendation on where I should go for a year 2 GTI to service in the inner west of Sydney?

                  • Beyond Limit Autos at Rydalmere? Some people would class that as inner west. As an ex-Glebe resident Inner west stops at Leichardt in the West & the outer edge of balmain for me.

here's a mobile guy that's based around Five Dock. Somebody will know his number - he has a good rep.

                        • Sorry I should have been more specific, inner west area meaning Petersham, Marrickville, Ashfield type area.

                          Thanks for the suggestions though!
