I failed to mention that not all undesirable gases have odours that a human can detect. An activated carbon filter should be able to capture such gases as well.
I do not believe that to be the case. The filter media of an activated carbon product is usually grey in appearance, whereas the filter media of an ordinary cabin filter is usually white.
In general, manufacturers usually specify a replacement interval for cabin filters (carbon activated or not). Volkswagen of course, have their own recommendations, depending on the individual market.
I leave it for any owner to decide whether to follow that schedule, or whether they make their own determination as to when it should be replaced (if at all).
