Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The 7-speed DSG (0AM) is more efficient because it uses dry clutches, has a wider spread of gear ratios, weighs less, is maintenance free and presumably costs VW less to build (though that might have been countered by unforeseen warranty costs). It all sounds great on paper, doesn't it?
To be fair, the unit works pretty well for the most part, given its intended application (road cars that are predominately driven on the public highway) - it's just that VW were caught on the wrong side of its cost vs reliability analysis.

Just to add fuel to the fire.. my previous comments about the end of the manual transmission over time appear to have some currency

Continuing on from my previous post below, my mates DSG is dead as a doornail. He is looking at approx $2,700 for a new mechatronics unit (from Harding Performance with a 3-4 week wait), DSG oil and filter change (needs to be done when replacing mechatronics despite having the DSG serviced about 1 year ago), and the labour component. It's going to be somewhere around $4,000 - 4,500.

The car has no forward or reverse drive, gears are flashing on the MFD, and the car cranks but only starts every now and then (but cranks for ages before it starts).
Tow truck to get it tomorrow and take it to the mechanic.

Funny thing that i cant get my head around is that the car was fine one minute, broken the next. He literally drove it away from my house to get something at the shops, then returned to my place, turned the car off.........then a few minutes later went to start the car and MFD flash + endless starter motor cranking.

Its brand new according to HP. There are reconditioned ones available that are cheaper aswell.
STANDARD HARDWARE
= Dual Mass Flywheels -
= Mechatronics unit – New (12 months warranty)
= Mechatronics unit – Reconditioned (3 months warranty)
= New DSG transmissions (12 months warranty)
= Reconditioned DSG transmissions (3 months warranty)

Yeah ill leave it up to my mate to decide on whether he chooses a new or reco'd mechatronics unit. I was told that the new ones are about a 4 week wait, so if the reco'd ones can be supplied quicker then he might go with that option and presumably save a few bucks at the same time.
I'll ask him to request the broken mechatronics back from the mechanic.

So is he going to keep the failed one? I'd be interested to pull it apart. I'm an electrical engineer and I'm doing a PLC programming course with a mechatronics engineer, it'd be cool to pull apart.

There was this VW TV ad that showed a white DSG effortlessly overtaking a truck. Looking at the driver I saw no gearshifting so I assumed he had the DSG box.
This ad swayed my opinion into going for the 7sp D*****S***G******.
Lucky I am still alive after the multitude of 'DSG failure' fails I have experienced trying to drive this car.Last edited by Cavill; 25-02-2013, 12:02 PM.
