  • Usually just a bit of love and care , no hardware. That car stills need a new one from VW though and once intalled and configured it will appear to have the same vin and other data too- essentially it will be the same ECU as before. With your hand controller I don't think they are too fancy either so it may not store flash counter values and you may simply be able to load it again. You shouldn't have to pay for this as the same file that what used before would would work but there may have to be a tiny but of effort at their end if something needs to be reset perhaps
Did you see what errors where showing in the engine module before it went to VW ?

    • Thanks for the info on the ECU Mark. So if you think that perhaps the existing Viezu tune that is on the hand controller might work once the new ECU has been installed and coded i might give it a try. Hopefully it will just time out if there is a problem and not corrupt the ECU or something?!?!

I have the errors on a VCDS scan at home that i can post up tonight if you are interested. There were a bunch of communication errors and the P-R-N-D lights on the MFD were flashing. Engine would crank but wouldnt start. Was fine one minute and dead the next....and then it worked again, car started, he drove home which was a few minutes away and then the car never started again after that.

      • I have a white manual that my son is driving and I just purchased a Black manual for my fun car. I am flying up to Brisbane to collect it and drive 2000km back to Victoria. It is second hand and I had a great deal on the car in a private sale.

        Just love manual golf

          • I picked up my car an hour ago after having my mechatronics unit replaced...the service advisor said VW were extending the warranty on gearboxes by an additional 2 years from the date of purchase, so 5 years all up.

              • My mate just got a nice bill from VW for $3,235 for a new ECU for anyone interested (ive linked my previous post).

Tune has been lost too, so have to pay for a new tune from Viezu. Car is slow as with the stock tune.

Dead ECU has been confirmed by European Car Centre in Newcastle after the car was towed there a few days ago. Got to get it towed to Audi/VW to get a new ECU installed and coded etc to his key/immobiliser. Old ECU had a Viezu tune too so that will now be lost and ill have to help him get another tune to suit the new ECU. Apparenty around $2,500 for the new ECU.

Im off to eat my hat now....

                    • Nice cars. Do you need another son to drive your black one?

Ps - you sig says the black has leather and heather seats. Never seen heather as a golf option

I imagine if a problem occurred on reading/loading a tune then they'd need to come to the party, but would an ECU fail at a later stage because of the tune? Be a hard thing to follow up on at a guess.

Hopefully they at least re-tune for no or minimal charge on the replacement.

Visiting the local Viezu tuner later this week myself..

I don't think there is any indication (not from Lucas at least) that the tune had anything to do with the ecu failing. I think it was one of those "it's a VW"tm things.

I'd push them for a pretty significant price reduction if I was you/him. I reckon they would come to the party.

                          • It would take 19 minutes of someones time to reload the file so I doubt they would charge for it.I don't charge for any reloads

                              It's a Mk5 GTi 2007/08 model so it's out of warranty.

Waiting for options/pricing on the retune at the moment.

No it wasn't the tunes fault. Just a very rare case of ECUfailallofasudden-itis.

The handcontroller is now void (according to Viezu) as its locked to the old ECU. So ive asked for prices on a new hand controller + tune, and then just a tune from the closest distributor (no hand controller).

                              • Pretty easy to do the fix himself anyway all you need to do is:
                                open old ECU
1.Place orignal (dead)ECU in BDM frame and use the BDM (Background Debug Mode) Programmer to retrieve a copy of the flash memory area ~2Mb file. He can leave the Micro and eeprom areas alone.
                                2. Use a serial programmer to load the retrieved file (this is the tuned file) onto the ECU selecting the appropriate protocol for the MED9 ECU of course, he wouldn't need to worry about chksums because the retrieved file from the dead ECU would have had this correctly calculated originally so even cheap clone tools from Ebay could be used
