Went and looked at this today

But the service history was a bit 'iffy', serviced four times with only two of the four being done at a stealership/garage. Also said that the next service was due at 66k or 6/6/16 but it was currently sitting at 78k so that raised a red flag for me haha.

Certainly did!

Purchased a 2012 mk6 gti from Coffey Ford in Dandenong. Full service history always serviced at a stealership
Only has 74,000km and full leather interior.





Gonna miss my mk4 so much but this gti is definitely gonna help the healing process haha

sooo after 6 long years I am Looking at selling the MK4 gti and getting into a Golf R. I have been scrolling the web for about a month now. Basically is there anything I should be looking for other than the obvious. My Budget would be pretty maxed at 35k. I have seen a few at around the 30k mark with usually just over 100k on them. Question is am I better of maxing my budget and finding one with around 70k on it or saving some money and finding one with higher k's? Would love it to already have a tune as being in TAS there is no one around that I would want to do it for me. Is there any extras that would be worth the extra $$$? dynaudio, dynamic chassis control?

Any pointers would be great!

Golf Rs are pretty bullet-proof, and there aren't really any specific weak points to look out for.

Cars do come up in the sub-$35k range with ~50-60,000km on them, and all things being equal, low mileage is very desirable. Turbos and other parts have a finite lifespan, and depending on how many kays you're intending to do I'd be taking my time to track down a good low-kay example. The upfront cost may well save you in deferred maintenance costs over time.

As for options, that's largely up to you and your personal taste. There's no real 'must have' options, although the DCC is a very good idea on cars fitted with 19" wheels. Check out these threads for more info and discussion:

Go for a lower km model if possible. As for tuning, my old Golf R now lives with its new owner in Hobart and runs a tune from DNA Tuning - it's a tune you load onto the car yourself via a dedicated hand controller.

Thanks for the input guys I have had a read through some of those threads. I do love my music and have a decent stereo in a car I think is a must so if I can find one with the dynaudio that would be great, leather seats as well.

A question and sorry if this has been answered multiple times... but if the car has ACC how does work if you wanted to add a set of coilovers? Good call on the 19's and having the ACC that would make sense as I once had 19's on the mk4..... was a rough ride..

In regards to K's I live about a 4 minute drive from work and it wouldn't be my main car. Over the 6 years of having the Mk4 I've only put 35,000k's on it. So not really TOO worried about K's. But of course the lower the better.

^ if the car has adaptive dampers, and you want to add coilovers - you need to get the (very expensive) KW coilovers with the DDC function.

Otherwise, you can just get lowering springs (Eibach/H&R/VWRacing etc) and keep your stock adaptive dampers.

Buying a GOLF R

Hello all,

I feel im in un known waters here. i have a Mk3 VR6 and due to it being so good i want to upgrade.

Is there any words of advice on a Mk6 golf R DSG i should consider.
there are a lot at circa 60,000 - 70,000 kms is that to high?

I was just hoping people could maybe provide some words of wisdom

Also i will install a full turbo back most likely if anyone has advice on that also.

Hi Stephen,

I have a 2011 mk 6 golf R DSG , besides some electronic wiring issues , the car has been mechanically good.

If the car has 60,000 km on it , make sure that the major service has been done , which involves the DSG and Haldex 4 motion servicing.

Usually sets you back $1000 at an independent VW specialist in Melbourne.

Assuming it's a '12 model, i'd say that's right on average. If it's met or exceeded it's service intervals I can't see it being an issue.

I got lucky......my 2012 R had 32,000 clicks on it when I picked it up in March.

Thank you for the advice. Im not sure why in afraid of high kms (70k). That being said my mk3 has done 240k and its fabulous.

There is a 2012 R dsg white in WA.. im looking at it derived to SA for $33800 woth 34k on the clock?

Have a search - this question about buying a 2nd hand GTI or R has been asked countless times. I know the Mk6 GTI and R well as i have owned, serviced and modified both.

The Mk6 R is a very robust and reliable engine/drivetrain overall, but there are some common failures (fuel pump follower/ignition coil packs/PCV valve) that you might want to take into account for a 3-4yr old car with 60-70,000km. Luckily these parts are cheap and about $300-400 will replace all of them for piece of mind.

The DSG's are strong and generally very reliable, just make sure the DSG and Haldex oil were changed at 60,000km /4yr service.
