Fair enough, I can drive a manual but my partner doesnt so thats no an option. I didnt realise there were still problems with the 7 speed, I have one in my tiguan and its awesome, never missed a beat, I've read its the DQ500 not the DQ200 so not sure if that makes a difference. Seems a shame to purchase a 90TSI for more money and less features/performance so I guess I will look at the diesels and the Skoda.

tiguan DQ500 is a totally different gearbox to the DQ200.
If 118tsi is cheaper than 90tsi then that says something doesn't it?

The fact they are cheaper tells me that it either comes down to the fact that they do have a lot of issues or their bad reputation has driven prices down, which is why I posed the question to see what owners are finding.
I've checked out the octavia's are they look like a real contender my only concern there is the 4 star safety rating and from further research it rated poorly due to the impact the driver takes in a accident. So everything's a compromise I guess.

I recall a few of the Skoda guys commenting that the Octavia wasn't resubmitted for test with the facelift model (around 2010?).
You also need to remember that the star rating is only a comparison between vehicles in their class. eg: a 5 star large car is safer than a 5 star small car. The Golf is classified as a small car whereas the Octavia is classified a medium car. I'm not sure if that makes any difference in the overall actual safety (as opposed to a comparison within a class).
Interesting figures in the ANCAp tech reports though - the Golf definitely appears better.

Hmmm it is a bit larger so maybe that makes a difference, either way its loads safer than the 1980 Honda Prelude I wrote off when I was 18 by spinning it into the back of a truck and I survived that lol.

I'm obviusly misinterpreting something in those tests as a Golf Cabriolet gets the same 5 stars as the Golf Hatch even though there are no front/rear side curtain airbags. /confused.

Yeah not 100% sure how that works, and apparently if you're going to hit a pedestrian, hit them dead centre, its the safest zone.

Hi only registered tonight after reading and researching on the net for weeks on end and came across this site, and I'm glad I did.
Ok so I'm looking at buying a dsg golf gti 2010, 2011 or 2012 model. just wanted help or advice choosing which one to go for. Obviously I just want the best model possible, so which model is safest and certain problems fixed/erraticed eg dsg gear box faults/problems, are there any differences between the 3 year models interior/exterior.... All those kind of things! Also what does my10, my11 and my 12 mean and what's the difference between the 3. Any help info or advice would be so much appreciated.

The last of the model is always best! So if you want a mk6 and now the mk7 is out you want the last year mk6 was produced...

Model Year is not the year of manufacture; they can be as much as 6 months out (ie MY12 beginning from ~June 2011 manufacture). A Model Year designates a certain trim/specification level - VW may make small running changes over the life of a model.
The Mk6 GTI was available in Australia from MY10 (mid-late 2009 builds) through MY13 (late 2012 builds).

Also just wondering I've read mixed posts and Internet sites about the dsg issues! I mean surely if I buy one its not a case of luck or unlucky getting a good one or not! Just reading up on this issue is making me reconsider buying one... The dsg issue isn't that bad is it? Or am I pretty safe to buy one? Does it depend on how the previous owner drove the car? Does it depend on if they got the major service at the recommended 60k mark which includes the dsg service? Like is there any way of telling that the car I'm buying won't have these issues? Eg: getting a proper vw mechanic to look over it/test it.

My rule of thumb is buy the newest you can afford in the best condition possible
6sp DSG is pretty reliable these days. Or get a manual. They are a sweet shifting box.
