As my first VW and turbo, this car is fun enough for me Your negativity about my choice won't change that LOL
That is a good attitude to take and the best approach to things.

    • I choose the GTI over the R for the following reasons

      1. Better fuel consumption
      2. Lower running costs without AWD and less complicated DSG service (from what I was told)
      3. Those red stripes and 18 inch detroits which the R does not have.
      4. $8,800 extra in my back pocket

I do love the R (but only in Rising Blue), although the additional purchase cost and long term running costs were harder to justify. Hence why the 'bean counter' in me prevailed yet again.....

With respect to the Ed 35, again, without a corporate plus discount, price gap to std GTI too great to swallow as all good accountants would say.....

        • I agree with Finance Analyst in that without discount the 35 Edition doesn't look like a good proposition. For that money, I'd be waiting for the Scirocco R.

Jay Leno owns over 80 cars. Most of us can only afford one. Perhaps we should all have Ariel Atoms as our daily drives

Or get one that does double duty of fun and practicality (ala the original Mk1 GTI) - like the R, MkV GTI, 6N Polo GTI.

                • Or as Clarkson puts it, none of the subsequent bearers have lived up to the name, so you have to go for the 1M coupe.

Yes, not even yr beloved MkV GTI

As long as VWA stay with the same pricing levels of every other Country the Rocco should be a touch cheaper than the equivalent R..... however.... I have been told by one Dealer Principle that he thinks they will only be fully loaded Rocco R's at around $80K.
Plain stupidity if they do that....... In my opinion anyway... lets see what the pricing will end up at.

I still don't get the GTi vs R debate.... I agree with SF... why struggle with the value proposition when at this level it really more of an Emotional decision...

Wow.. $80K.. I did read they would be loaded but didn't think they would be coming in at that number.. not quite sure what they think they are competitive with.. though I did read the new Merc coming out is comparing itself Mercedes CLC to hit the market in 2013 but in this country who would go that far befor just saying I will get a Beamer.

As for the GTI v R debate.. there isn't really one.. started out as an education and has turned into emotive measuring contest for sh!its and giggles. Most here know that the only one is better than the other because of colour.. everything else is just noise

                      • Remember kids. It's not how you drive or what you drive.

It's the pride to which you defend it to the death over a quite similar car on the internet that marks you out as a true car enthusiast

How do you get it to 80K?

I didn't... a certain VWA Dealer Principle threw that figure at me.... all I can figure is that they don't want to sell any because at that price they are not worth it...
He then said it was cheap compared to the $120K being asked for Rocco's coming in from NZ and being complied by City Performance.

I will wait till VWA release their official pricing.

I wonder where they will price the GTI 35 Edition? Above GTI yet under the R ..... not much room in there..

                              • The prices were already stated a few pages back before rude MKV members took the thread off target
I did however update the first post with a quote of the pricing (inc link) so you can quickly find it though
