  • Most dealers have already indicated there will be no discounts for the Edition 35, this makes them roughly $4000 dearer than an equivalent GTI. This is before the discount that most of us are able to get with the standard car. I will let you decide if there is value in the Edition 35, setting aside the emotional part of the decision.

Saw that well after I had made the comment...

Makes it quite tight as a value proposition... GTI, ED35, R all within $8 to $10K depending on discounts etc.

Naaa it is easy.. The GTI is a GTI, the ED 35 is a pretty GTI and an R is twice the car the others are.. there is your value proposition..

Now where is my full metal jacket, helmet, captain America shield and the panadol.. this is going to get bumpy

I prefer to have an extra $10k in my pocket, plus the net present value of the cash saving in servicing costs/fuel costs in having a bog standard GTI over an R

Whatever keeps you warm at night.. being richer is not measured by money alone.. and if indeed you were using it as a value proposition then why not deisel on a lower spec Golf.. your arguement carries no water

A Golf 77 would see a 20K saving, let alone savings in servicing, fuel, insurance over a GTI

                • Hehehe... yeah, when a GTI has the Golf R's engine and soul, is it really still "just a GTI" ?
It also has the Golf R's tailights, skirts, mirror caps, and probably other things. And that's in addition to the myriad of things that the standard GTI shares with the R, being that they're so closely related...

I mean, lets not forget that the Golf R name was possibly going to be GTI-R when they had decided that R20 wasn't suitable.

Yes, not even yr beloved MkV GTI
If you had looked properly, the MkV was not included in that line up - only the MkVI.

Or is the R really an R or an S3 in cheaper livery? Or a 4WD Pirelli? - The argument can be taken that way too.

That's because as everyone knows, the VI is really the V.V. Just better

So while there's plenty of lively debate on the subject, you have to hand it to VW - they're giving us all every possible choice really (short of a 4WD drivetrain with an EA888, for which we'll likely need to wait for the MkVII or else buy a Tiguan). Choice is a good thing for people who feel strongly about their flavour of performance Golf, that's for sure!

I reckon there's loads of value in the ED35 for those for whom the EA113 + K04, tails, skirts, distinctive rims etc add value.

Funny you should say that. I was thinking the same thing. Plus a more robust 7 speed gearbox to boot (not the troublesome one on the 1.4twincharged that gave hell on my friends' 'roc and Golf Sports
